    Philosophy of Nice Bottles

Mid-range allocations/semi-nice bottles are for three occasions for me: generic gifts, having people over, and hunting trips. Nice bottles are for exceptional events (a toast at the end of a successful hunt, a wedding when I’m a groomsman, etc.). The nicer the bottle that comes out, the more...

    Breaking from Camo

I just wear whatever I want to wear - usually more related to the weather and species than anything else. Some of my most comfortable cold weather clothes just happens to be camo from known brands, but I’ve worn Columbia fishing shorts duck hunting Laguna Madre, and I wore some cheapo joggers...

    Carry Gun

Currently searching for a bitchin’ pair of late 18th to early 19th century dueling pistols to carry. Until then, I guess I’m sticking with the old EZ Shield.

What’s on your 2026 reading list?

Lonesome Dove ends up an excellent read, and you’ll instantly want to go read Comanche Moon and the rest of the series when you finish it. I’m currently working through all the books I should have read by now but didn’t. Just finished the Count of Monte Cristo, and started Moby Dick today...

    Favorite wild game dish?

I’m pretty sure my wife just steals Gordon Ramsey’s recipe half the time.

    Favorite wild game dish?

Backstrap Wellington is always in my favorites - much better than when people beat it to hell and fry it until it becomes leather.

Interchangeable blade (scalpel) knives. Love em' or hate em'?

Broke plenty on game, and started moving towards a fixed blade. The final straw was when a blade snapped under almost no pressure in my yard while I was cleaning a nilgai skull. Couldn’t find it no matter how hard I tried—even ordered a metal detector. Just to ensure no one would ever step on...

Let’s see your watch. What’s the story behind it?

One of the two Seamasters I own, but the other one is a vintage dress watch. As my son grows up, I want him to see it as a watch that is very special to me before I give it to him. Unsure why, but I snapped this picture of it when I took him of his first “duck hunt” (shooting woodies in a...

Books that shaped your outlook on adventure or manhood.

Six Years with the Texas Rangers. The author is riding the open range by 19, fighting Comanches and rustlers. 19 year olds now think it’s cruel and unusual punishment to pay their own cell phone bill and rent. Read it in my early 20’s and decided it was time to toughen up and do hard things.

Books that shaped your outlook on adventure or manhood.

Came here to say My Side of the Mountain. 10 year old me read that book 20+ times and decided that there was still adventure to be had.

Best Value Bourbons Right Now? Anyone?

Heaven Hill BIB. Every time it’s in a lineup for a blind tasting, I consistently rank it in the top tier. It used to be hard to find, but I see it everywhere now for like $45.

What’s the one moment in your life that should’ve killed you, but didn’t?

When I was 12, my buddy and I were hunting small game along the Pecos River unsupervised. We decided to cross the river at some low rapids, and he fell in and lost some gear. As it quickly floated downstream, I dove in for it, being swept down the river towards Mexico. My entire short life...

Best dive bar you’ve ever been to and why it deserves a monument

Bruno’s Dive Bar in San Antonio’s King William district. It’s a dingy building to go enjoy a drink at after dinner, and the entire building is illuminated by a neon sign of a buck mounting a doe.

Where’s home base for you and what do you do when you’re not working?

I’m Caleb McClain from Brandon, Mississippi. I spend my free time pretending that I will hold out for a big buck, only to shoot the first forky that walks out.

My name is Caleb, and I run laps.

Just realized I’m stupid and this doesn’t say my first name (which is also Caleb).
