I always liked "The Wild Bunch" with Ernest Borgnine and William Holden... "Apocalypse Now"... "The Great Santini"... "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest"...
Red Dawn came out when I was in the USMC, I liked "Gangs of New York" too but I was an adult when it came out...
I think I'm slightly younger than you, but everything from the Guns of Navarone, through the Dirty Dozens, to Platoon and Red Dawn were high on my list. Ernest Borgnine and his era of actors were classic.

I remember watching Terminator 2 at my grandparents one Sunday afternoon when I was 3 or 4. Still one of my favorites. Die Hard was on quite a bit. So was The Dirty Dozen, and Pop always laughed at the end. WWII vets were just built different. Pop loved a good war movie, and was a big fan of Eastwood Westerns.
Dirty Dozen is the Inglorious Bastards of its time.
