Does anyone have any experience with Blackbeard Scuba charters? I'll be taking one of their six day scuba trips to the Bahamas in a few months. I'll be living aboard a 65 foot sailboat with 20 other people. I should get two dives per day, at least.

Living aboard a 65' sailboat with 20 others sounds like a legendary adventure or the start of a reality TV show. You're going to have some cool stories! I've not been on that charter, but @Pete Correale might know something about them. He is the resident authority on close-quarter seafaring and sketchy rum punches.

I think it's gonna be like living in a hobo flophouse on the high seas with a ton of diving and fishing included. I figure the kind of person this appeals to is likely just as big of a nut-job as I am so I should be in good company.

I have actually never done anything but freedive. If u gave me a tank tomorrow and told me to breath off it and dive, i would probably end up accidentally killing myself.... I'll be totally honest, 20 people on only a 65 foot boat sounds pretty uncivilized. It will either be a lot of fun, or a complete shit show. I would say it's about 16 people too many.... All jokes aside, stay safe, sounds like it could be a little sketchy as well. At the very least, don't let them forget and leave u out at sea....

What is the appeal of free diving? I ask as someone who has only seen people post highly curated videos of themselves doing it set to eerie "deep" music. Is it more relevant to spear fishing because a diver doesn't create any bubbles like they would with a tank?

The idea behind this trip is to cut costs and get as many dives in around the area in a week as possible. The boat life is secondary. It's rustic on purpose.

I did an Outward Bound sailing trip on a 25 foot sailboat with 12 other veterans in the Florida Keys in 2022. No bunks, no electricity, no phones, and we cooked all of our own vegetarian meals (no refrigeration on the boat for meat). It was more like a sailing survival school. We learned to navigate by chart and compass and a little bit of celestial navigation, too.

I let go of a lot of PTSD on that trip related to years of being a street cop in New Orleans and my partner's murder which had only happened two years beforehand. That was hard but in a way that subjecting oneself to hardship can also be healing and transformative. I think this trip will be a lot less heavy feeling and I'm looking forward to learning to dive for real.
