Really enjoyed the interview. KC is really laid back, and I can just tell he's very competent. I really liked his thoughts on instructing, and ideas regarding encouraging people to participate. @Jason Vincent is spot on IMO regarding law enforcement's actual capability (on average). I spent over 21 years in law enforcement as a tactical team leader and spent the last 16 years of my career in special operations. I was assigned to a Federal Task Force and worked with many of the alphabet groups (FBI, DEA, HSI, CBP, etc .) I would submit that the average officer isn't much better than the average civilian. That may ruffle the feathers of some in our society, but based upon my personal observations as a department instructor, SWAT TL and Range Safety Officer I believe that to be true. You would think that officers would be very competent with their handguns but the sad reality is that many never fire it (or clean it) except when they are required to conduct their annual qualifications. It's unbelievable. And inexcusable. I would also say that it's not their agencies fault.
I also completely agree with @Jason Vincent regarding SROs. The reality is most officers that want to be SROs, want the job so that they don't have to respond to calls.. that's a fact. Their personality is such that they are uncomfortable actually patrolling the streets and responding to real crimes in progress, they would much rather patrol school hallways and be the big kid on the block. It's sad to say, and unfortunately I don't see that changing in the near future..
I remembered his name from IPSC/USPSA Comp stuff many years ago, glad to see he's still in it and teaching.
The dynamics of pistol shooting, accuracy, competition is a VAST field now; JV does a great job of clearing up the path via KC's POV.
The GSSF is a great place for everyone to start in, have opportunities to rub elbows, and get a foot in the door to find the people/places/things OTR.
Even most private club/ranges will not allow you to "get off the X" until they have a tactical 3-gun day, or host 2/3 gun matches. The first couple of times you go it's humbling, awkward, time consuming. Don't worry about it.
I really enjoyed it. KC is a really likable guy and his story at starting to shoot at a young age was cool. I also liked that Outrider was discussed. We need to get him on a hunt with us.
Its crazy I grew up around guns my entire life but I live in an office and only use them to shoot animals and once in a blue moon I will go to the range because I do enjoy it. When I do we typically plink around. I do realize I would most likely die in a gun fight.
