Has anyone had success, or failure, flying domestically in the US and bringing their FE copper Everything Mug or Thicc Midget mug, in a carry-on bag through TSA? I'd headed to Kentucky next month for a family reunion and would like to bring a mug.

I think you would be fine

I can' imagine you would have troubles even as a carry on - it is a mug for fuck sakes. I just saw on TSA's page where you can bring scissors up to four inch blade length. Someone needs to design quick detach scissor that turn into two 4 inch knives.
...or two "Sweet T's" that join together to form a pair of scissors/pruning shears..

I’m 98% certain Schoby had flown more than once with a Thicc Midget so he would know.

He’s probably right about the mug too.

Thanks, all. I appreciate it. Like a good watch, I have brought my FE mugs already on some memorable outdoor travel, and I didn’t want to be foolish when flying. I’ll bring it this trip and report back.

I have indeed thought about driving, and would like to do it one year. I live on up on the north Sonoma coast, about a 2-hour drive to the nearest city of Santa Rosa. From here, it’s about 6 days scenic travel to Lexington KY, each way. Then a trip over to Boone. I had Grok plot a relaxing route and recommendations, avoiding I-80 as it’s a big trucking route, and it seems just about anyone can get a commercial license at the moment.

It’s quiet up this way, for the most part, once one can tune-out the non-stop political noise. I think this is why I have enjoyed the FE community, magazine and excellent products. There's not a lot of hunting here and the nearest range is 90 minutes down Hwy 1. When bluegrass family visit, they salivate at shooting the blacktail family grazing outside the kitchen window although I’ve come to like them. There is plenty of wood-splitting and clearing work from 80 foot Doug firs and redwoods, and to make the place fire-safe each year. I EDC a fixed blade, often one of three Sweet T’s, and keep an Everything mug on a hat hook in the truck. Thanks again.

My "drive" comment probably came off as dismissive. It wasn't intended that way.

"Drive" is my pragmatic default setting. For lots of reasons.

I used to fly quite a bit. But, over time, it became apparent that between new regulations (and their enforcement institutions), my preferred cargo (checked and carry-on), deteriorating airline service, draconian rulesets, etc... I simply am not wired for contemporary, commercial air travel. Private, sure. Not commercial.

So... I drive. Anywhere on the continent is reachable in a couple days. And, I get to travel on my terms, see things that I'd otherwise miss, carry what I want, avoid the "herd", and avoid the institutions (and their functionaries) that make me want to leave bodies in the aisle.

I haven't yet bought a return flight, and am thinking of taking Amtrak across, through the north country to Seattle, then south. Haven't done that before.

Correct: I just returned from bringing the Thic Midget in my backpack through TSA a few times — no problem, not even an inquiry. Works great for in-flight beverages. And, I’m set for Christmas gift planning for a few relatives.
Another vacation highlight — my first visit to Winkler Actual in Boone, and holding their upcoming ‘America 250th’ piece.

Good to hear on the mugs. I never thought it would be an issue.

Winkler is such a special spot. They have a cool retail store down at the intersection and the manufacturing shop was as impressive as their knives.

TSA took my SureFire pen a couple of years ago. I started arguing with the lady who snatched it. I got kinda pissed, and she motioned toward an armed TSA guy and asked if she needed to bring them into it. Asshat. That one really rubbed me wrong. Just give me my damn pen. So I wouldn't be surprised if they snatched a mug either.
