So my wife and 2 youngest children went to a public outdoor range here in northeast Utah today. WTF.....

When we arrived 1 family was already there. They had literally no business owning firearms. Groups at 25 yards were measured in feet and yes it was all bad.

Once we called cold range and set up our targets they started making jokes about the distance we shoot at.

30 minutes later 2 men show up wearing Springfield XD's in 2 strap thigh holsters. Nylon of course... they set up bipods for their "precision" rifles. Heavy bolt rifles in 22.250 their targets set at 100 yards. They were both wearing double strap thigh holsters with Springfield XDs.

I ended up only shooting 20 rounds. My 4 year old daughter shot further than anyone on the range..... 125 yards .22 magnum.....

My wife hit a soda can at 80 yards with her Staccato and the whole place went silent....

Why do people hold themselves to mediocre standards at the range?

In my humble opinion the range is the place to stretch limits.

I have tons of gripes. What I've learned is to not judge a person too harshly until their actions show the necessity of it. A lot of people have shit support gear because they don't know any better. A lot of people get sold a bill of goods re: the guns they buy. Some people are early in their journey and have not been exposed to those who know enough and know better to help them be better. An example: many years back when I was running a range one of our regular customers would shoot a Hi-Point C9. He had enough cash to buy a 50 round box of ammo a week. Dude had a decent-ish holster for it and he could SHOOT. If we'd treated him like shit we'd have lost him as a customer. He became a regular and as his situation improved so did his guns.

There are absolutely people who need to be shamed off the firing line. Most folks can use a little or a lot of guidance. We should treat the range like the gym. Those who need help because they don't know what they don't know will be driven away if we do it incorrectly. We want to build the culture, not be snobbish gatekeepers.
