Good advice here. Travel with $5, $10 for tips - especially in Zim, the USD is the official currency. That was the only good decision that Mugabe ever made. You'll need a power converter, it's like Europe they run 220, your electronics will fry with just an adapter. the brand we use is Aproca, probably from Amazon. Go and enjoy, y'all will be hooked!

This summer, winter there, my family is doing a tourist (i.e. not hunting) safari to Kenya and Rhode.... er Zimbabwe. (I'm hunting in SA next year, don't worry about my man card) Having never been to Africa, I'm sure there are things I will wish I had known before going. I've read a few on here: Don't bring my Gin shirt to Zimbabwe, no camo, don't drink the local water, etc. I also know I'll need to bring some sort of adapter for charging electronics.

So what am I missing? What did you wish you had known or brought on your first Africa trip??
Bringing a gun would sure make it interesting lol

Question for the collective: I carry an Emerson knife every day here at home. As long as I check it, can I carry a folding knife in Kenya and Zimbabwe? (I love that my daughter is the one who thought of this question. I gave her a Benchmade folder her first year as a wrangler and she never goes anywhere without it.)

I’ve always had a folder with me in Africa. Never any issue, so far.

I haven’t taken anti malaria meds in years and I probably never will again. They zap your whole system. A co-worker got malaria when we were in Uganda years ago and he was absolutely fine with proper medical care. Similar to the flu. If you’re healthy, Maleria shouldn’t be too bad if you get treatment.

We’re too quick to take strong antibiotics as preventatives these days. Save them for when you really need them.

Also, I’ve had tick bite fever and it wasn’t too bad. Definitely not something I’d fry myself with antibiotics over.
I had the craziest dreams on the malaria medication

Don't know about black but blue definitely attracts them. Don't wear blue if your going to be in an area that has tse tse flies.
Charlie knows this because I wore a blue hat on a trip to Mozambique and was the only one constantly getting fucked up by tse tse flies. It wasn’t until the flight home that I googled it and found out they’re attracted to blue.

I think Dave Edgcumbe knew the whole time and let me take the bites.

I've never brought a folder to Africa with me, so I'm no help there. Just wanted to say that it's cool to hear that your daughter came up with the question.
