I don’t care what the douchebag Instagram cosplay guntubers hanging out at Rock Island Auction tell you, guns don’t have a soul. Even the cool guns. We have souls though, and so do you. Our souls refuse to let some things die.

A snub-nose revolver with gloss blued steel and wood grips is one of them. They can be pretty impractical and very cool at the same time. I’ll go ahead and give you impractical and practical carry scenarios now.

Walking through a busy shopping mall with your family: Impractical. A defensive shot could stretch out and snubbies are hard to shoot accurately.

Snubbies in the Wild

Going to a BBQ at a friend’s house: Practical. Low threat level and if Tina’s ex-husband shows up with a baseball bat to tee off on her new boyfriend, you have better reach.

Going to dinner in a shitty, but up and coming neighborhood in a big city: Practical. If you’re situationally aware you can spot the guy that crosses the street to cut you off on the sidewalk and you can have your hand on the snubbie in your coat pocket before he gets to you. I did a test where I fired a shrouded hammer snub nose from inside my jacket pocket at 4 yards and I hit the silhouette 4/5 times.

Going through a neighborhood where protestors are attacking ICE agents: Impractical. Liberals are carrying assault rifles now, so you need to be able to defend yourself and others at longer distances and with greater precision than a snub nose will allow. Carry something with a red dot and enough rounds to miss a few shots.

While guntubers hypothesize, a handful of us at FE have actually had to use a firearm to defend ourselves or someone else, so we know what fits a use case. The common theme here is if the threat level is high, don’t carry a snub-nosed revolver. If the threat level is low, carry whatever you want, but consider a classic with some pride of ownership built in.

Let’s Get Tropical

The Field Ethos x Smith & Wesson “Tropical” .38 comes with pride in every box. We created this Performance Center gun because we value the classics. It has iconic style with internal upgrades. It’s built buy an American workforce. The wood grips are honed by an American craftsman (custom Tyler Gunworks). The hammer was filed, the trigger was polished, and the gold bead front sight was soldered by an American gunsmith. It looks vintage, but under the hood she’s a hot rod. A true sleeper. And an Heirloom.

This gun doesn’t have a soul, but you do and if a classic hot rod .38 speaks to yours, this one is the tits. And at least when you’re dead and your kids go through your gun safe, they won’t pull out a Canik and question whether you might have been gay.

Oh yeah, we also removed the Hillary Hole (internal lock).

Available only through gun dealers who use Lipsey’s distribution.

Pros: Cool as shit. Can easily handle a steady diet of .38+P. Performance Center trigger to eke out a little more accuracy. Gold bead front sight is very visible. Pairs well with a Hawaiian shirt, gold chain and mustache. Heirloom grade. No internal lock.

Cons: Hard to shoot accurately beyond 10 yards unless you really do some serious training.
