I’m a newbie to the sport and just wondering what would be a good one. Since I’m landlocked it would mainly be used for freshwater fishing but would like to try an occasional foray to the gulf coast.

70-80 cm rail gun for inshore gulf and freshwater where vis is normally limited. 90-110 gives you a bit more range on clearer days, but sometimes can be too much in low vis. If offshore or better vis I like at least a 110cm. All plenty maneuverable for bottom hunting in rocks, coral, but still offers some range for longer shots. Open water 120cm or longer. I personally use my Rob Allen 110cm reel gun for everything. Can go cheaper for the shorter guns. Any will do, honestly. I prefer closed muzzle for beginners. I don’t like the screw in bands with metal wishbones. Best to get around someone to learn as lots of nuance for situations like anything.

This is a great entry level speargun for freshwater lakes and even some inshore spearfishing in the gulf.

GR, the owner of the brand is a wealth of knowledge as well.

Thanks I’ll check it out!

Here is another speargun option for your freshwater needs. These Pathos rollers are very good bang for your buck.

Also,
Neptonics is a great place to buy gear from. Florida based, owned by Jerry Guerra, great guy and extremely knowledgeable. Give the shop a call and ask Jerry for any questions you might have.

Cheap starter gun should do everything you need. Wouldn’t even rule out polespear as you learn the fundamentals. If you find yourself in more open water or better visibility, I’d spend a little more on a 110cm plus that you can grow into. Like golf clubs or fly rods, you will end up with multiple for different uses/purposes

Interesting. No experience with them. You think it’s thinner/lower quality aluminum?
Yea, shitty components, crappy material, I think there mech’s were pretty bad, thats what was failing… with that said, im sure they have improved them over time.
