I'm looking for a dedicated slug gun. I want a rifled barrel for sabot slugs. I am debating red dot or scope.
I'm thinking a Mossberg 88 with a side saddle mount, an 870 with a cantilever barrel, or a Savage bolt. I have rifles - this is a side project for me. I'm open to all opinions on gun and ammo selection. Will be used to deer hunt in thick bottoms.

The preferred slug gun in Central MN is the Savage 220 followed by the Savage 212, Remington Accutips are the preferred sabot's, otherwise buy a slug barrel for what you have and experiment. I will say Hornady sabot's did not expand at 40 yds out of an 870 20 ga. with a Remington rifled slug barrel, still removed the top of the heart and ended up under the offside hide.

Is the 20 gauge a recoil thing? I'm guessing the Maxus II that Tex recommended probably has less recoil, but that is at the high end of my budget. I'm going to look for Accutips locally.

I think it is an accuracy thing, less recoil is a bonus, it is a rifle stock vs. a shotgun stock thing too, albeit a plastic Savage stock, but it works.

Just seeing this post, I don't know where I've been... At any rate, I highly recommend the Ithaca Deer Slayer III... I have one in 12 ga.. incredibly accurate.. when I say accurate, from a rest at 100 yds mine is throwing Hornady SST slugs into a 2 inch groups (3 shot groups)..
For whatever reason the Hornady SSTs are the most accurate out of mine.
It's a big beast of a shotgun but it's capable of being shoulder fired and is a dream from a tree stand or ground blind and a rest.

See link attached:

I'll post a picture of mine tomorrow..

I went with the Nikon Slug Hunter scope with BDC reticle that Ithaca provides. It extends my range from a rest out to 200 yards.

I’ve killed a shit ton of deer with a Remington 870 with an 18.5” rifled barrel, saddle mount with a Nikon 2-7 on top. I shoot lightfield 2 3/4” sabots. Unfortunately they quit making their hunting slugs, but I stockpiled them and still have about 15 boxes. Most guys have switched to straight wall cartridges since Ohio made them legal, but there’s something about taking that beat up 870 into the woods I just can’t seem to let go of. I do not feel at a disadvantage with it as most of the shit holes I hunt don’t offer more than 75 yard shots.

Attached is a pic of my Ithaca slug gun... I actually purchased it years ago when portions of Kitsap County became shotgun only. It literally is a shotgun that shoots like a rifle out to 100 yards. Groups open up between 4-5 inches (from a rest at 200 but the trajectory of the slugs is such that I wouldn't shoot it beyond 200 yards. I'm very pleased with the accuracy at 100 yards though (2 inch 3 shot groups) from a rest. It's a true full floating 26 inch fluted barrel, and because it has bottom ejection similar to the Browning's it is nice from my LH shooting standpoint..

Dad got me on the Ithacas in '82 with a DeerSlayer as well, and I have his Ithaca 20 ga that he also put venison on the table with through the 60s when he was a kid on the farm. The quiet classics...

Thanks a lot Shifty. Now I “need” a slug gun. That’s a great piece you got there!
