Springfield Armory SA-35 4″ — 60 Second Review

Who knew 3/4-inch would make all the difference. Cue all the “that’s what she said” punchlines. But if you love the Hi-Power, as we all do, then you’re really going to want to check out the Springfield Armory SA-35 4″ for EDC.

We’re are all enjoying this unexpected Hi-Power revival. Dead and gone just a few years ago, Springfield read the room correctly when it brought out the SA-35 in 2021. That’s an old school, full-sized and faithful variant of John Browning’s 9mm masterpiece.

But it’s a bit hefty for all-day, everyday carry. The new commander-length version cuts it down just enough, while maintaining the desired 15-round magazine and all the familiar controls of the classic Hi-Power.

Paired with a Milt Sparks Summer Special holster, the new SA-35 4″ carries like a dream. For anyone rocking the full-size bedside, this is a great pairing for EDC.

I've always been a huge fan of the Browning Hi-Powers.. one of my biggest regrets is getting rid of my old Browning Hi-Power in order to purchase a new back-up gun (Kimber Tactical Ultra II ) for on duty carry (before I retired).. back then I was issued a full size Kimber 1911 for duty issue and the compact Kimber Tactical Ultra that could use the same magazines interchangeably seemed like a practical call..
After a few years on SWAT doing maritime intervention training in the Ports of Seattle and Tacoma and seeing what the salt air and water did to the Kimbers, we switched quickly to Glock 21s..
I still have the compact Kimber, but I often wish I still had that old Hi-Power too!

I too carry a Kimber Ultra. The TLE II model. After researching this morning, it seems that the SA35 4” is about 4 oz heavier than the Ultra. I’m not sure if that is weight with a full magazine, but it doesn’t seem to be that drastic of a change for double the capacity. I’m hoping to find one locally as I would like to add it to my carry rotation.

I think we have a thread for guns that we regret selling/trading. That would definitely be on my list of regrets. Especially looking at what BHP prices have done.
