Questions by not-so-anonymous Instagram users. Answers by Jason Vincent.
Our Instagram Sunday Q&A is a weekly—or semiweekly depending on JV’s mood that day—chance for you to interact with our team directly. Ask whatever you like; insult us if you please; just don’t go crying about it when JV puts you in your place.
For those of you who are not completely inept, your answers will be swift and educational, leading you to knowledge akin to that of the ancient philosophers who helped drive our species from the Stone Age to modernity. That last part may not be true, but we sure as hell will give you our opinion and help you with whatever problems need solving.
We decided to post these Q&As here so those who had something better to do than look at Instagram on a Sunday afternoon or are dedicated to their craft and actually work Monday morning, can revel in the glory and enjoy some much-needed humor, quality product recommendations, and possible links to Schoby’s OnlyFans page.
*If you are assigned laps, these are not optional—all laps are mandatory and need to be filmed and sent to the Field Ethos Instagram account upon completion. Lap distance is arbitrary; only you know the full weight of your stupidity. Go the distance that feels right.
Q: Are you going to release the watch videos from Gunderson’s?
A: I’m going to take Wiley, Solomon, or Marcus out to @gundersonjewelers so we can make a legit education film about great watches from every price point. Japanese Seikos all the way through top-end Rolex.
Q: What are you putting in your pilot survival vest?
A: A parachute.
Q: What shirt is that?
A: Probably something your grandma picked up at Sears and Roebuck and sent over with some pinup shots.
Q: I’m seeing the Bilksem sold out on websites. Did it already drop or is that a placeholder for when live?
A: That’s just a placeholder for the Mossberg–@christian_chraighead Bilksem.
Q: When will you have the Gin Shirt back in stock?
A: Yes. Soon.
Q: What silencer and Leupold scope would you recommend on an X-Bolt in .300 Win Mag?
A: Leupold VX-6HD and Rugged Suppressors Alaskan Ti.
Q: Traumatic day for Canada and Mexico. God bless America.
A: The corrupt Mexican government is to blame for their problems. At least Canada tried.
Q: What kind of accuracy to expect out of Steyr collab? Purchased and received mine already?
A: If you find factory ammo that it likes, .5 MOA-ish. With a handload you should be able to get sub-1/2 MOA.
Q: Will there be a restock on the Acro collab?
A: Yes – Aimpoint.
Q: Thoughts on 2025 Ford Broncos?
A: Cool car for chicks.
Q: Ultimate (non-watch) wedding gift from bride to groom?
A: You’re a dude. Are you really about to tell her what to get you? 7 laps.
Q: Red dot options for the FE CRUSR. Cannot find an Acro anywhere.
A: Aimpoint Micro T2.
Q: Some good options for hearing protection? Don’t want to break the bank. Sub-$500?
A: Walkers Game Ears — We all have and use them … a lot.
Q: You get sent back in time to the Wild West. You get to bring one revolver. What do you bring?
A: Magnum Research x FE BFR collaboration in .454 Casull. After running the cylinder dry shooting horses out from under bad guys with .454, you can feed it locally sourced .45 Colt.
Q: Is DSC going to survive?
A: If they leave Atlanta … quickly. It’s a great organization that does a lot for conservation. We’re proud to support them, but it’s clear nobody wants to come to Atlanta for this.
Q: What’s your daily driver?
A: F-250 Tremor & INEOS Grenadier Fieldmaster.
Q: What’s your favorite EDC pistol?
A: Favorite to carry would be a Smith & Wesson J-frame (have several variations) because of weight. I’m faster and more accurate with a Springfield Armory Hellcat Pro Comp.
Q: Should I order half size down with Meindl Vakuum boots?
A: We don’t make sizing recommendations on boots. Order both sizes and send one pair back.
Q: Not a red dot guy. Scope recs for FE CRUSR?
A: EOTech Vudu. For that cartridge, the 1-6, 1-8, or 1-10.
Q: Know anything about the 10th Mountain Division?
A: Hell, I don’t know much about the first nine flat land divisions.
Q: 300 Win Mag option with scope around $5K— wood stock preferably?
A: In that price range for wood you should look at: Winchester Repeating Arms M70 Super Grade with Leupold VX-6HD or an M70 Alaskan with the same scope but mounted in Talley quick-detach rings.
Q: Anything worth mentioning from show season? Also, congrats on raising $800K.
A: Show season is brutal on the immune system, but it’s always great to see good friends and support conservation. Thanks. $800K was a big haul for our action item at SCI. Make sure you come next year.
Q: What would be the best first hunt for me to come on?
A: For high-volume shooting and post-hunting beers, the cull hunt with @johnny_d_hill.
Q: Any ETA on the Vellies restock? Need a pair before I get stuck in Europe for nine months.
A: We should have an ETA on the new FE boot soon.
Q: Vise/level combo for locking a scope in?
A: We have two styles of levels in the Do Everything Kit.
Q: 10/22 or an AR-22 for overall fun and varmint massacres?
A: Volquartsen.
Q: What’s the best AR-15 barrel length for a do-it-all rig?
A: 16 inches.
Q: 300 Win Mag. with 26-inch barrel. Optimal length to chop/thread/suppress?
A: 20 inches.
Q: Thoughts on the Franchi Affinity 3 shotgun for sporting clays?
A: They’re solid.
Q: Rangefinding Binos. New Leupold BX-6, Revics or other?
A: Revic Optics.
Q: Is the Bilksem an FE collab, or is that Mossberg collab still in the pipeline?
A: You asked your fiancé for permission to buy an Omega watch. The recoil on a shorty 12 gauge is mild, but you can’t handle it. 3 laps.
Q: 180-grain TTSX or 195 Hammer in my 300 Wby? Elk and mule hunting.
A: I learned how to read the summer before 1st grade, and I’ve known since then not to buy a Weatherby chambering. 4 laps.
Q: Will the grandma shirt be back in stock in large?
A: Negative.
Q: Why no Field Ethos booth at SCI?
A: SCI for us is a show to just hang out with friends and raise money for conservation at the auction. We enjoy just walking around to see everyone.
Q: SoundGear Phantoms still the best hunting ear pro out there?
A: SoundGear Phantoms are for the range. We prefer their Sheilds for hunting.
Q: 30-06 Winchester Model 70 for 400-500 max in the Southeast or Lord’s caliber?
A: Hard to beat.
Q: Wool layers worth the price difference?
A: Sometimes. Not all wool is equal.
Q: I went on a thermal hunt this weekend. Hate my cheap ATN thermal. What should I buy?
A: Armasight.
Q: Source for custom, molded ear protection?
A: Soundgear.
Q: Favorite .38 load in the Tropical?
A: Black Hills Wadcutters.
Q: Fuk Iran. Let’s get a warm-up with Mexico.
A: U.S. operators need to be really careful not to shoot the CIA drug lords when they’re hunting the regular drug lords.
