We’ve been telling the story for years: Taurus guns made today are not the guns you might remember from a different chapter in their history. For the past six years, Taurus has been on a mission to produce some of the industry’s best firearms at a price that everyone can afford. Traditionally these guns have been designed for regular folks to use in their everyday lives. Whether it’s on the range, in the woods, in a holster for your CCW, or next to your bed, their products were mainly designed for us civilians. Now they’ve taken a major step into the duty pistol category with the new Taurus TX9 series.

Some of you might turn your nose up to the concept of a Taurus duty gun. Without putting your hands on it and without putting rounds down range with it, you won’t get it. This isn’t another gun in the G-series from Taurus. This gun was built from the ground up to be a hard-use contender against the heavy hitters on the market.

The TX9 has the features you expect from a serious, modern striker-fired 9mm. It’s a chassis gun with ambidextrous or reversible controls, and the frame features interchangeable backstraps, so you can tailor it for your hand size or grip style. The gun comes optic-ready and is compatible with Glock sights, so you can fit it with whatever backup irons you prefer. It’s currently available in full-size, compact, and sub-compact with 17-, 15-, and 13-round mags, respectively.

Seat at the Table — Taurus TX9

Should I expect to see this gun in holsters across police departments nationwide? Not necessarily, but I do expect this gun to make some big strides with private security companies and eventually in some smaller LE applications. The gun has the chops to compete with the biggest names, but it will take some time and proof before many people accept it.

Overall, the TX9 is a great gun. For the value, it’s an incredible gun. Put a light and optic on it, and it belongs on your bedside table ready to serve you for years. At any price point, this gun brings a lot to the table.

Price: These can be found online for less than $400.

Pros: Taurus came to compete with the biggest names in the industry with this gun. It will prove to be a real competitor over time.

Cons: You might have a hard time finding holsters for it at first, but the team at Taurus is working quickly to fix that.
