So i'm looking to hunt Wyoming Elk in 2027 and I obviously need a new rifle for it. Likely will be a backcountry horse back hunt. Thinking of a Browning X-Bolt 2 Pro McMillan Carbon rifle in either 7PRC vs. 300PRC. Max distance is 500 yds, hopefully closer. Typically shoot 300WM and .30-06, but would like a different set up, really no experience with either caliber, but seen both talked about a lot. Let me know what you think. Goal is for Elk as a priority for this gun.

I put together a rig for mule deer/elk. Allterra mountain shadow carbon. Hux suppressor. Nx8 4-32x50 f1 scope. Total weight is a tick over 9 lbs. It shoots sub moa. Actually a 12 round group typically only leaves 3 holes inside a 1” square. Took it to the FE long range school/prairie dog this summer and stretched it to 2200 yds no problem. I understand your goal is 500 yds and less but it’s good to know what a rifle can do. I shot around 200 rounds through it 2 days with no soreness. Not sure I could do that with a 300. I’m taking it elk hunting this fall. Another good setup would be the endex from gunwerks. The folding stock would be awesome for strapping to a pack. The x-bolt is great too. Either way, I love the 7 prc round.

Either will be fine but the 7mm would be my choice. My primary elk rifle for the past 10 or so years has been an Echols Rifles 7mm Remington Magnum throated for 175gr bullets so it’s pretty close to the PRC performance-wise.

I used a 300 PRC on elk once it was a shit show. The cartridge wasn’t to blame, of course, but the match bullets we were saddled with. Ended up writing about it for FE a while back:

Good luck with your hunt prep- shoot a ton from practical field positions and use a good, controlled expansion bullet.

Similar set up:

Allterra Mountain Shadow Steel
Swarovski Z8i 3.5-28x50
Spartan bipod with gunsmith adapter
FE leather sling
Barnes (Vortex) 180 GR TTSX
