A Prayer for Lent

In my faith, yesterday marked Ash Wednesday and the commencement of Lent.

Among other elements, it’s marked by 40 days of prayer, abstinence and almsgiving (charity).

If you are like me, my prayers aren’t secret, but I also don’t broadcast them to the world, so I’m not suggesting we share prayers. That said, and while this time can and should be about giving something up, I try to digest a Bible passage daily to put something back in to the mix, to enrich.

I’d like to believe this thread could be a place where for 40 days there can be an exchange of the passages in the Bible that resonate most with you that day, in preparation for Easter. I give full license for @Jason Vincent and @Charlie Benton to delete this thread if either thinks I’m pushing the “good book” too hard.

For me today, that’s Ecclesiastes 3, 1:11

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens:

A time to be born and a time to die,

A time to plant and a time to uproot,
A time to kill and a time to heal,

A time to tear down and a time to build,
A time to weep and a time to laugh,

A time to mourn and a time to dance,
A time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,

A time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing,
A time to search and a time to give up,

A time to keep and a time to throw away,
A time to tear and a time to mend,

A time to be silent and a time to speak,
A time to love and a time to hate,

A time for war and a time for peace.

What do workers gain from their toil? I have seen the burden God has laid on the human race. He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.

Ecclesiastes 11:9.....Rejoice, O young man, in your youth, And let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth; Walk in the ways of your heart, And in the sight of your eyes; But know that for all these God will bring you into judgment.

June '87, in the Fort Leonard Wood processing station, they had a movie theater and showed us Platoon. EC 11:9 to me, is a daily reminder that every day when I ask for Him into our lives, we are re-born and in that Youth again. EC 11:9 is the opening message Oliver Stone put into Platoon, and we Soldiers carry it forward. Drive on, God bless you all and yours.

Growing up my church always played the OG Catholic songs—Here I am Lord and On Eagles Wings takes me right back to the communion line ❤️ 🦅 🪽 ✝️. I remember singing Here I am and praying it while singing it, feeling like it was tied to my purpose and calling. I always felt like God said “I’m gonna take you up on that.” I will go Lord, if you lead me, I will hold your people in my heart 💪🏼
 
Psalms 51 7-17 has been in front of me a lot lately.

“ Purge me with hyssop and I shall be clean; wash me and I shall be whiter than snow. Make me hear joy and gladness let the bones which you have broken Rejoice.
Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities.
Create in me a clean heart oh God and put a new and right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from your presence and take not your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation and uphold me with a willing spirit.
Then I will teach transgressors your ways and sinners will return to you.
Deliver me from blood guilt oh God, oh God of my salvation, and my tongue will sing aloud of your deliverance. oh Lord, open my lips and my mouth shall show forth your praise.
For you Take no delight and sacrifice; where I had to give a burn offering, you would not be pleased.
The sacrifice acceptable to God is a broken spirit, a broken and contrite heart of God you will not despise”✝️🪽🐑

Here’s one for today:

2nd Timothy, 4: 17-18

But the Lord stood at my side and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. And I was delivered from the lion’s mouth. The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever and ever.

Many Marines I served with had this tattooed on themselves or written on their gear. If I was ever to have a Bible verse tattooed on me, that would be it. “Send Me” is also the title of the biography of an amazing Sailor, Shannon Kent. It’s a very inspiring read
 
I came across these three verses back to back in my scripture time— something is happening for someone suddenly. 🙏🏼

“ and Hezekiah and all the people rejoiced because of what God had done for the people; for the thing came about suddenly.” 2 chronicles 29:36

“ but Elisha said hear the word of the Lord that says the Lord tomorrow about this time…” 2kings 7:1

“ tomorrow about this time, I will send to you a man from the land of Benjamin…” 1 Samuel 9:16
 
Something I’ve tried to do is every week day since November or December of ‘24 is to spend about an hour in prayer in the morning. A lot of mornings it’s less, some mornings it’s more. From the time I get in the shower until I get out the door, I’m trying to be in prayer. It has transformed my faith in The Almighty, and changed my life in ways that I can’t even begin to describe. Maintaining focus on the fact that The Lord will provide, and His Providence is more than enough has been life altering. Each day, the focus is on total surrender to Christ.

Today’s verse (John 14:6) in the Bible App is reflective of surrender:

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”
(I went ahead and included John 14:7)
