Knives — I’ve got them coming out of my ass backwards. Long ones, short ones, sharp ones, dull ones. Knives for everyday carry, knives for filleting fish. I’ve even got a couple Rambo-style Bowie blades in case I ever find myself engaged in trench warfare. I think most outdoorsmen will attest; you can never have too many knives. But the question is, which ones work best for what.

Among my quiver of cutting apparatuses, I have owned quite a few skinners and boning knives for processing wild game, but have yet to find the perfect, all-around, go-to blade, until recently. Leave it to Hogue to solve that problem. All these different companies out here always seem to try to reinvent the wheel, but quite frankly it is simple, and Hogue hit the nail on the head with their new Bone Flex Boning Knife.

Pete’s 7-Inch Boner Bone Flex

I will lay it out for you simply: Overall length about 12 inches, with a CPM Magnacut blade that comes in at about 7 inches long. It is sharp, durable, light and has just the right stiffness, making it perfect for processing large or small land animals. The key is the blade stiffness. Unlike a fillet knife geared towards processing fish, a boning knife needs just a minimal amount of flex to work proficiently, and Hogue nailed it perfect with this one.

Let’s not forget the cryogenic heat process and stone tumbled finish used in its making, as well as hand honing the blade’s edge. This is a made-in-the-USA, high-quality tool built for hunters by hunters. Another no-brainer piece of kit that every outdoorsman should own. Find one good knife maker, and stick to them, it pays off in the long run.

Price: $206.96-$215.96

Pros: Made in the USA of high quality; the best Boning knife you will ever own. Comes with a lightweight sheath; also comes with a sleek carrying case. Will also work great for trench warfare.

Cons: As goes for all good blades, be careless and you can easily cut off your digits. Price point is a tad higher than your run-of-the-mill, shit-house bubba blade. If your scorned ex-girlfriend gets ahold of it, she might just Lorena Bobbitt your ass!
