Planning a diy Alaska hunt in 2028-9. Leaning towards caribou, possibly blacktail. Would prefer to at least be in the foothills, not flat bare tundra. Have done a lot of backcountry style hunts in the lower 48, comfortable living off my back. That being said, I’m starting from scratch on this.

Mainly looking for logistic and financial advice. Any insight or experience is appreciated! Since diy, assuming Outrider doesn’t offer this, but any tips or contacts would be awesome.

Finding an area with both Caribou and Sitka Blacktail might be the tricky part. Unless you do two separate trips?

Kevin Dana (Owner of Barney’s Sports Chalet), Marcel Powell (@adventurehuntsnz on Instagram), Derek Blake (@akderek), Austin Manelick (@mission_alaska), Frank Sanders (Alaska Trophy Outfitters) are a few guys you could contact for more info?

To go along with that, unless you draw a tag, or decide to go with an air transporter, you’ll probably end up hunting caribou along the Haul Road. 5 mile archery-only limit on both sides of the highway. Once past the 5 mile limit you can use rifles.

For Blacktail you have Kodiak Island, Prince William Sound or the Southeast. Most likely need a boat transport or fly in.

Kodiak does have a registration hunt for feral reindeer. Could look into that to get both at the same time.
