Most of the time, my truck is like a rolling gun vault. Since I’m constantly either evaluating, photographing, hunting or shooting something that goes bang, firearms of all shapes and sizes litter the backseat. Most of my zippered cases have given up the ghost, and those that haven’t often aren’t large enough for the oversized rifles and optics that have emerged over the past decade or two. Throw on a suppressor and the butt of that rifle sticks out of most cases like a baboon’s posterior. Room for a mounted bipod? Forget it.

Big rifles need big cases, and I finally found one that can hold them all: Armageddon Gear’s Precision Rifle Case. Sewn in America using tough-as-nails mil-spec Cordura Nylon, I’m not going to wear this thing out anytime soon. It is available in 52- and 58-inch lengths, so it’s capable of holding any rifle short of an extreme ELR rig (they make a separate case for those).

I can easily slip a massive PRS Open rifle with a 26-inch barrel, a suppressor and a bipod into this case with room to spare. A rifle with an oversized thermal optic? Not a problem.

This case keeps your gear clean, dry and safe from bumps and scrapes. Though I wouldn’t toss it in a lake, the tight weave of the fabric means that it is very water resistant. It does a nice job of keeping dust out as well. A half inch of foam padding is sandwiched between two layers of nylon to protect your rifle and optics. Rifle cases like to rip at the muzzle, which is why this case is significantly reinforced in that area.

The case lays flat on its left side, so it rides well on the seat or in a truck bed without wanting to roll. There’s a zipper that runs the full length of the case, so the rifle doesn’t have to be dragged out—you can open it like a book. With the case unzipped, it makes for a clean and dry area to work on or admire your rifle. I’ve even used my case to go prone to shoot at a coyote over a rock in Wyoming—yeah, that’s right, I shot “at” it.

There’s a large cargo pocket on the right side of the case that can hold ammo or other accessories and a smaller zippered slot near the muzzle. This flat pocket is a great place to store paperwork, including your suppressor’s Form 4 or smaller items such as a Kestrel. The case has two carrying straps sewn onto it to carry it like a suitcase as well as a removable shoulder strap. My case is Ranger Green, but it’s also available in Mutlicam, Multicam Black, AG Camo, Black and Coyote Brown.

My only criticism of this case isn’t so much a dig as it is a byproduct of its rigid construction: it is not something that you’re going to easily roll up and throw in your bag to take on an airplane for a faraway hunt or match. This thing isn’t merely a sleeve.

Whether you’re carrying your rifle between stages at a match, hauling it in your vehicle, carrying it to your blind or you’re a real deal sniper preparing to do the Lord’s work, protecting your high-dollar rifle and optics should be a priority. For a well-built case that was designed by folks who know what shooters need, look no further than the Precision Rifle Case.

If you’re unsure about whether you need a rifle case that costs almost three bills, do yourself a favor and watch “Armageddon Gear American Made.” If you don’t reach for your wallet, you’re likely a communist. I paid full price for mine and it was worth every penny.

Price: $275.

Pros: Well-made and sized to hold most any long gun.

Cons: Doesn’t compress well for travel.

I need one of these for my X Bolt Max Long Range. What's the possibility of getting a collab version with FE logo on it like the truck rifle case?
