With a career that spanned three decades, five continents, and several war zones, you’re bound to pick up a few stories along the way. In this episode of The Order of Rogues, I sit down with Jason Vincent and we dig into a few of those experiences and how my military chapters carry over into my new role with Field Ethos.

One story that came up was my 30th birthday in Iraq and how a dead body showed up on the doorstep of our friends in a certain three-letter agency. I had mostly filed this away in the memory banks due to the operational tempo at the time and the hundreds of operations that followed. I was hungover, laid out on a couch trying to maintain composure while doing a phone interview with JV when he asked for a crazy story that I might have forgotten about, and this one popped up. I will caveat this as I kinda F’d up in a couple ways. One, I was target focused and missed the dudes with guns that walked up. And secondly, I never told my wife this story. In my defense, she had plenty to worry about when I was deployed, so less details, in my mind, were better.

Knowledge is Power

We’ve all heard the saying that knowledge is power, but it’s only powerful if you can share it and make the people around you better. This is my philosophy when you hear me say “knowledge transfer” during my training classes on the ranges and in the field. I’m at the point in my story arc where sharing experiences and teaching means more to me than doing it myself, whether that’s in the field or on the range.

We discuss some of my training trips I run through FE Outrider, like my long-range precision classes and Aoudad hunting trips in West Texas. I also host a few adventures throughout the year with Outrider, Cape Buffalo later in the year, Argentina this summer, and the one that I am most excited about is Buffalo and Banteng in probably the most remote location on earth, the Northern Territory of Australia.

The Team Dad Role: Field Ethos Operations

Listen in as Jason and I discuss some of the issues with organizing extremely talented and driven team members and growth at Field Ethos.

The job sounds like operations. In reality, it’s managing controlled chaos at speed—keeping a group of highly capable, highly opinionated people moving in the same direction without killing momentum or each other. Not too dissimilar to some of my previous positions keeping the train on the tracks with people from multiple agencies, civilian and military, with the same end state but slightly different goals.

My biggest challenge will be bringing some structure to the team without it slowing them down or making them feel constrained or driving myself insane.

Top Secret Projects

I think we did a pretty good job dancing around upcoming projects—dropping just enough breadcrumbs without giving away the playbook.

Collabs are going to be a big part of the Field Ethos offerings this year, so stay tuned as they will be limited as always.

Uncle T’s Take

At the end of the day, the title doesn’t matter. Operations is about people— talented, driven, slightly unhinged people pushing hard in their own lanes.

My job is to keep the wheels on, keep the fires small, and make sure nobody burns the place down while building something cool or gets hurt in the process.

It’s organized chaos—and if we’re doing it right, you’ll never see how close it gets to the edge.
