Alright guys, looks like I'm making a last-minute trip to Australia next week and would love some recommendations for things to do and places to visit. I'll be in the Brisbane and Airlie Beach area primarily but may have a day or so in Sydney. Definitely looking for things more off the beaten path and can make a couple hours drive from those locations. Thanks in advance!

Depending on how much time you have in Sydney, I'd highly recommend taking a drive up to The Newport in the Northern Beaches.
There's an awesome bar called The Arms, attached to a restaurant called The Newport, address: 2 Kalinya Street, Newport, New South Wales, Australia.

Hard to explain how awesome it is - but, imagine the best local pub / proper drinking establishment + a world class restaurant, together overlooking spectacular beaches. No need reservations, it's open dining on the property. If you can find parking down on the beaches, take a dip.

Also... just go to Bondi Beach, swim in the pool, swim in the ocean. Grab a Negroni at the restaurant Icebergs at happy hour. Then walk over to The Stuffed Beaver and smash some beers + a burger.

If you have less time and want something simple - drive to Balmoral Beach, get a beer and food at the Boathouse or Bottom of the Harbour.

My wife is from Sydney - I've spent a lot of time in the ocean, drinking beers and eating the foods - don't worry about sharks, they put big chain link fences in the water to keep them out. Just don't question the fences reliability, it'll ruin the experience.
