The USDA and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has put out a notification for hunters regarding the New World Screwworm. It's not good because the fly's maggots eat living flesh; therefore, they're a threat to wild game and livestock. The notification talks about why it's bad, what to look for and how to report it. No mention of what these agencies are doing to combat it. So, I Googled it. Reportedly, the USDA is actively combatting the New World Screwworm (NWS) through a $100M+ "Grand Challenge" initiative, focusing on releasing sterile flies and strengthening border security. Consider yourselves notified and informed if you hadn't been already.
But, here's my question: how does one sterilize a fly? Bonus points for creativity.
