I get the impression that the members here vary vastly in terms of real-world hunting experience-- that's a good thing. For those who are newer to the game, I feel like it is my duty to introduce you to one of the best pieces ever written on the subject.

The author, Ross Seyfried, is one of the all-time greats in the world of outdoor writing. Besides being an incredible storyteller, he has a ton of experience actually using guns in the field. For background, he grew up on a ranch in Colorado and won the IPSC world championship back when competitors used real guns and functional holsters. Rob Leatham has called him "the greatest handgun shooter who ever lived". At the top of his game, he walked away and became a PH in Zambia. Later, he operated an elk hunting ranch in Oregon.

He rarely writes these, days, which is a shame. This common-sense piece should be required reading for anyone looking to chase game animals with a firearm:
