Well I have joined the ranks of what many of you already have experienced. I had the absolute joy of taking my oldest daughter who turned 8 on her first deer hunt this past weekend to the Beam brothers Lowrance Ranch in Texas. I have heard for years how fulfilling taking your child hunting, but man that is that an understatement. On her first deer (a doe) I was calm and collected, but when we went out for a buck I was a bundle of nerves. Not sure who was more jacked up - her or me. I honestly haven't had that kind of adrenaline going through me since I was a kid looking through a scope at my first deer. Two clean shots with a Steyr in 7mm-08 with reduced recoil loads - and two dead deer. All went according to plan and luckily there was no drama chasing a wounded deer. She is hooked and can't wait to get back out. When we left her direct quote was "I want to quit school and just hunt everyday"

Haha. You and me both!

@Mike Schoby - that just awesome! Fills my heart with joy seeing this. For what it’s worth, the first time luster may tarnish, or rather fade, but the fun definitely doesn’t have to by any means. I’ve enjoyed every time in the field with my son, now 29, and my focus is how can I create more of them in the future. It may be a son thing, but funny, the adrenaline flips to fuckery, and building the fun in to these adventures.

He has limited time these days given his commitment to our armed forces, but he and I had two trips this year to the Central California Coast for boar, and revisiting long range school - per pics/clips. Yes, he was concurrently hunting bow and rifle, with a range gun.

Bravo Sir!IMG_5966.jpegView attachment IMG_5953.movIMG_4499.jpegView attachment IMG_5953.mov

Lowrance is the perfect place for something like this. Those dudes are the best.

I would be ok not killing much moving forward if I had more kids/grandkids to take out and hunt with. I cant think of many better things I have done as a parent it is so much fun and it is so rewarding.

My boys are 20 and 18 and more than capable of sitting on their own and shooting shit but I still like to get a sit or two with them in a tree or a blind over the season. They start to get mad at me when I pass up deer hoping they are going to run over to them these days.

My daughter is 15, in Iowa you can hunt with a parent without hunter safety until you are 16. Then you have to have it. She took it this year and she is excited to sit on here own, I am not that excited about it. Not because I am worried about her just because I enjoy hanging with them so much.

My middle son is going to Iowa next year, his brother is already there. There is some decent public spots around there so I am going to go help them hang some stands at the end of summer.

Nothing better than sharing those experiences with the kiddos. Mine are grown up so I have a habit of stealing other peoples kids to go hunting.

I have a bit of a gap between my kids and grandkids. I have been toying around in my head starting something here in Iowa around getting some disadvantage kids out hunting. Iowa has a great framework for a youth season.

You could get some kids out, process it for them and send them home with lbs of good protein for their families.

I love relaying the action on my Instagram. I guess it's because I always wanted to be a filmmaker. But that day was great because it all came together within a few hours, with all the ups and downs, and seeing my daughter go through it.

I'm so glad you enjoyed it.
As much as I love hunting (and I really love it), nothing beats taking your kid and experiencing the their excitement when they smoke an animal.

Schoby great story great deer. Please tell me that thing is getting shoulder mounted?
We are doing a euro - debatable for sure being her first and all, but I figure since she likes it there will be many more first species and I don't have room in the house to start the tradition of mounting all of her "firsts"
