The one you actually grab when the season’s over but you don’t wanna lose your edge.

Plenty of dudes parade their glossy walnut wall hanger piece to the public range for bench-bro nods, and then there’s my setup: Bergara B-14R carbon fiber barreled action dropped into a Q Side Chick chassis, Q Erector can , Leupold MK 3HD in a Reptilia mount.

I jacked the whole build straight from the legend KB after listening to his Live Q or Die podcast. It’s been my range day go to for a couple years, and damn if it ain’t a straight-up cheat code for rimfire precision.

Lightweight, stupid-accurate, eats .22 like it’s free, suppresses like a dream, and absolutely control-alt-deletes yard grizzlies. No reciprocating bolt bullshit—just pure, quiet, fun that pushes you to stretch shots you’d normally save for centerfire.

Screw sensible, this is indulgence. The rig that sparks that fire every time you shoulder it. Not for spreadsheet guys. But for the man who builds excellence because he can and because it’ll give your next of kin something worth fighting over. Skip logic. Chase legacy.

Pros: Reliable, accurate, ultralight, packable

Cons: Q doesn’t currently make the Side Chick Chassis anymore

Steyr SSG69 in .308, heavy barrel, late build, single trigger, highly modified with a new bottom metal that enables standard box mags versus the frail rotaries from the factory (cool, just frail), and a custom stock from Danny at Staffordshire in the UK, now sporting a Leupold MK 5 7-35/56 (VX5 in pic) - Spartan adapter and yes, probably needs the blaze orange version. I love to shoot this at the range to stay current, it’s a comfortable ride.

I don’t shoot far. In the PA mountains the furthest I’ve attempted a shot is 175 yards. Down a hill, with an excellent line of sight. There just too much brush you can’t see that might send your shot into a tree.

So, I shoot this Marlin 45-70. It’s easy to shoot it in the off season when it shoots sub MOA and is a serious hoot to shoot supressed.

She just needs a better scope and happy with it.

What scope are you thinking about for a replacement?

To be honest, I haven’t really looked into them yet. EuroOptic is an hour away from me… they have everything you can think of. So I was just going to take a ride there and play with their scopes until I find what I like. That’s where this sig scope came from actually.

My ideal scope for this would be an LPVO with 10x mag, good low light performance, and good clarity at the top magnification. Base mag can be 1 or 2x. SFP or FFP doesn’t matter as long as the reticle isn’t too “cluttered”.

Do you have any reccomendations on that?

There are a lot of good options out there. When you talk about a base mag of 2x, the first scope that comes to mind is the Leupold Mk5 2-10. It’s become one of our favorite scopes for so many applications.

Also, don’t be scared to try out an Aimpoint on these. @Jason Vincent runs red dots on these a lot. I believe he’s even paired some with the flip to side magnifiers. If you get comfortable with it, I think you would be shocked how effective a quality red dot can be for your setup.

Seems to change for me lots. Last couple summers ive been shooting my cz455 a fair bit. Built it as a "long range" type unit. Its got an IBI heavy contour 12 twist barrel and is bedded into a Boyds pro varmint stock. Use it mostly for gophers in the yard. Its fun to shoot at them 200 yards plus and watch the bullets come in like artillery 😆. Also enjoy shooting my ruger no1 in 22k hornet. The waypoint in 6.5 creed has become a favourite the last couple years as well.20250526_105402.jpg

"I'd rather drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow"

The weather was finally nice enough to hit the long range spot, and though it was fun banging steel with the 6.5, the 1100 yard max range meant the Solus was just "boringly accurate".

I put this .223 together with some spare parts as my take on the varminter rifles that were popular about a decade ago. The soul of it is a 24" barrel that was a take-off from an old Stag Model 6 that carried a sub-half moa guarantee from the factory. Within the first 20 rounds down the tube I was able to hover around .6-.7 moa with factory ammo so I have pretty high hopes for it. Repeatable hits at 1,000 were super easy provided I stayed up on the wind calls, so this will be how I keep the skills sharp between ELR trips to the east side of the state.
