I’m trying to track something decent down with a shorter length of pull for my 7 year old who is also a lefty. Open to any suggestions ( I just haven’t found much I’ve been impressed with) if I have to cut a stock down to get by for a year or two that’s always an option. He’s chomping at the bit to get a turkey this spring so we need to get practicing!

Are you looking for turkey in particular?

Both of my sons started with Mossberg youth model turkey guns and I can’t imagine a better first turkey gun for a kid.
20ga so light recoil. Pump so also fairly light to carry.

For an all around or upland gun I got them each a Beretta semi in 20ga. Heavier but better suited for ducks, upland and clays.

Those Beretta 20s are like trying to find hens teeth on the secondary market but you’ll find a few here and there.

Look for an old Ithaca model 37. It’s a bottom eject. They are also about as light as you will ever get in a pump.

All three of my kids ran through a Weatherby SA-08. Its decent gun, now being a lefty he would have to worry about the shell ejecting across his face and then there is the backwards safety.

Other options is to pick up a cheaper Tri Star O/U or something simlar.

My vote with be the SA-08, its a gas gun so it eats a little more of the recoil. My only complaint is my daughter is 5'3" and with the shorter barrel I have to be very careful with her walking next to me, that thing ends up pointed right at my head if its slung.

Thanks guys. I’ll check out the mossberg for a turkey specific gun. I am hoping to find a gas gun for recoil management. My brothers and I all had 1100’s growing up but that’s not an option anymore.

It seems pretty tough out there for semi autos for youth but I will check out the SA-08.
Thanks fellas

The Mossberg bantams have been my go-to for this.

I’ve got a bantam on the way, and we are pretty excited to get practicing. Hopefully have an exciting first turkey hunt to report back with

I got my 7 year old a single shot H&R 410 with full choke. He's also a lefty and it was the perfect gun for him to practice firearms handling and safety with, and it's legit.. within reasonable distances if he does his part birds die.

Not sure if it’s Turkey applicable, but I loved using my Rossi M2022 20ga/.22Lr Single Shot as a kid.

(On this hunt, my brother and I tried to take ptarmigan with my dad’s Taurus Judge with the .410 shells, along with my Rossi… We learned you had to be pretty close to use the Judge accurately lol also had the Ruger M77 Mark II 30-06 and .243 Win in case we saw a black bear)
