What’s your favorite hunting adjacent short story?

You’ve read The Most Dangerous Game and loved it. As well you should have. But have you read Algernon Blackwood’s First Hate? Because you should.

Here, I’ll make it easy for you: https://algernonblackwood.org/Z-files/First_hate.pdf

Carve five minutes out of your day and read it. I’ll be here to accept your thanks when you do.

One of my favorites was “Chasing the Wait” written by J.C. Rothwell in the latest field ethos journal. I think it really captured why the best part of hunting and adventure happens before the trigger is pulled.

“It’s the waiting. The fire. The silence. And that feeling… like something out there was waiting for me, too.”

Dang-- The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber is already named. Now I won't sound nearly so smart... In my opinion, Hemingway penned one of the best pieces of literature, ever, with that one-- hunting story, or not.

I always liked Lamb to the Slaughter but that is my new favorite!
