I don’t have any flat skins, so please take with grain of salt, but sounds like an issue of hydration. What about trying a leather conditioner like Obenauf's beeswax?

I've had pretty good luck with two options..
1.) spray bottle of water softening the "tanned" side of the hide then using heavy books on the hide to weigh it down, as it dries it tends to dry flat..
2.) using a clothing steamer (for taking wrinkles out)... Use the steamer on the hide and then place a heavy object on it to flatten it until it re-sets...

Trying to configure if your query is per marital aids, shoe horns, or flip flops?

Turn up the humidifier, find a little blue pill.....? IDK....
