Well, isn't this exciting and while I'm sure it'll all go hill real fast, but it'll be worth the ride. I'm Matt Powell, live north of SLC. Love writing, article featured FE, have gone on safari with Crusader Safaris and have a wall full of trophies. In my free time, I hunt, shoot, drive the side by side in the Wasatch behind the house, work on my old Land Cruiser, take the off-road van places, make burritos, and have a severe dislike of feral cats. If you're in Utah holla.

Matt,

How long did it take you to figure out the top of Farmington canyon on opening deer hunt should have a mandatory body armor requirement?

hahaha - it's so ridiculous. I leave the level 4 plates at home now because I go so far back that the road hunters aren't a threat. They are too out of shape to actually hunt.

My grandfather used to live up on Compton bench so I've spent a bit of time up there. Killed a few grouse and a couple moose up there too. Never been brave enough to go on general deer based on the lines of cars I've seen pictures of...

My dad's buddy in the late 80's sent their honda three wheeler off the road about halfway up the canyon. Took the remnants of the bike and hid it in the shed for a month until my grandpa found it. Didn't go so well!

It's not as bad as it used to be - this unit has a 14% success rate and I think 90% of that is youth hunters on extended archery opening weekend because they can use any weapon while us old folks have to actually hunt with primitive tools. Not nearly as many people come here now. The kid who cuts my grass and his friend, both high schoolers, took bucks the first weekend and after that weekend the bucks go nocturnal til the rut. If you hunt it during the week no one is up there, it's a ghost town, but weekends are stupid tho. There are some monsters in the canyons though - I tracked a group of 8 bachelors for three months leading up to opening weekend that were all monsters.

3 wheelers - damn. Talk about death machines lol. They were fun tho!
