Taking a great job opportunity that will take the missus and I from Maine to Texas. We’re very excited, but first time we’ve moved away from Maine and it’s a long way to move our stuff. PODS was a bit over ideal budget. Down from there it feels like an industry full of companies that will surely underdeliver, if not outright cheat me halfway through the deal.

Decided I needed to seek the advice and experiences of the Society. Anyone got recommendations on moving companies that don’t suck?

Haha a U-Haul pulled by your own truck!

In all seriousness, I do know a few higher-quality pack/unpack moving companies, but they are pricy. You get what you pay for in terms of quality of move... In my case, those moves were paid for by the companies I worked for at the time. Anytime I have moved via my own wallet I kept things in my own U-Haul.

Hey man,

My dad just this week essentially played a game between pack rat and pods. He’s moving from CA to OK in a few months and pitted them against each other.

His first price was $7500 and he worked it down to $3700. He just kept calling back and said what the other quote was and they’d beat it.

Pods also has a Costco member discount too.

But give that a shot and see what happens.

I can't really offer any help other than avoid using a moving broker, I use to follow an influencer who was scammed by one. They tripled the price after they picked up their belonging, then held everything hostage until they paid over 80k. They ended up having to hire lawyers. Crazy situation.

Steve appreciate the response! You get what you pay for is certainly what I’m trying to keep in mind here. Ultimately if I pay a little extra than I initially wanted to - if it all goes smoothly I won’t mind paying a little premium in the slightest. I’ve gotten my search into looking at some nationally branded carriers that I’m feeling better about, see if we can find one that feels solid. Take care!

Your dad got himself a good price out of that bidding war! Appreciate the tips Jake. We’ll look into Costco! Have a good evening man.

100% the conclusion I came to as well to avoid the broker. Seems like the internet is full of folks who’ve experienced the x3 price increase or more on moving day or during transit…. Taking a look into more nationally reputable carriers now that I am able to be getting a bit more comfortable with that service should be generally as agreed. Appreciate it!

Pay a local company to pack and move stuff in a U-Haul pod. For that distance, the cost is balances out. I drove a U-Haul across country and then did the pods across country, a different time. Pods all the way, amigo.
