Comical sequence from a few years back. I had made my annual trip to Midwest to deer hunt and was hunting hard, every day. I’m talking full day sits, for 4-5 consecutive days in the same spot hoping for 1 of the target bucks to show up. One morning, my nephew needs to be accompanied by an adult, so I begrudgingly agree. I even told him, if a monster steps out, I’m shooting it without hesitation. Because he’s with me, I switched from the stand I’d sat the last few days, and have to sit in a box with him. Within hours, he’s bored, cold and wants to go in. Simultaneously, my brother who owns the land gets a cell pic of a big one at the stand I had been sitting and sends it in group text. I immediately wanted to climb down and walk back to that stand. Instead, it’s determined my other brother, who was driving down, would sit in the back stand for the evening. I walked my nephew to the pickup point, and returned to my stand. I hunted all day. About 1-2 hours before sunset, my brother arrives, walks past me to get to the back stand, and within minutes I hear a series of gunshots. He wacked the big one on camera. He’s hooting and hollering and drove his truck down to pick him up. While I want to be happy for my brother, I’m a little sour. The next morning, it’s raining and I decide the spots ruined for a few days and I’m going to sleep in. We pull cameras later, and the very next morning another giant walked the same trail, just an hour before I got in 😂😭

I'm a pretty firm believer that deer do whatever the hell they want. Attempts at patterning usually seem pretty futile.

It can feel like whack-a-mole sometimes for sure. I think the best you can do is find their core area or doe bedding and hunt it as much as you can, wind permitting, without disrupting them. I used to try and pick the stand, now I try and sit the same stand and hunt all day, several days in a row. They are bound to show up eventually, if not pressured, and it seems the big ones move as much in the middle of the day as they do first and last light. I’ve missed too many opportunities taking lunch breaks. Weather fronts and pressure definitely dictate movement. I’m convinced bucks do big loops looking for does. Your bucks may disappear, but you may have a neighboring buck show up out of nowhere.

I've definitely heard the lore of big bucks moving during the middle of the day "because they've patterned hunters and realized that hunters leave the woods during the middle of the day." However, to date, I haven't found that to be true. What are the circumstances where you're seeing them moving in the middle of the day? i.e. Early season, late season, rut - stand over a field, deep in the woods, etc

Early season, pretty predictable cover to feed, dawn, dusk and night. You get the same bucks on same cameras. Usually rut, and not always peak rut, is when I see more unpredictable behavior and daylight activity. It seems the smaller bucks get more active sooner and more predictably at dusk, dawn. During rut, I’ve seen the least predictable movement, at anytime, including middle of the day from big bucks. It’s also when I see flyer bucks from neighboring properties show up, that I have never seen on camera before. I think they go lock down with does and move on when done. I usually hunt pretty deep in the woods, close to thick cover and doe bedding. Although, I’ve also seen plenty of chasing through open fields in the middle of the day as well.

Copy that. This all makes sense.

I respectfully disagree. There are a handful of fine gentlemen in this very thread who would valiantly smoke him.
Forgive my ignorance. I wasn’t aware that there was any public or private place to hunt in that area. Perhaps one day I’ll meet some of these fine gentlemen.
