I am from the PNW but currently living in Austin Texas working as the partnerships manager for Magpul. I am a former Army Sniper who still moonlights as an infantry tactics instructor for the Oregon Guard. I love hunting, wing shooting and precision marksmanship and as of late become obsessed with traditional archery and flintlock rifles. I started writing back in 2016 for the Journal of Mountain Hunting and have been lucky enough to contribute to FE, Petersons and a few others.
Dude, I love the JOMH and their podcast. They’ve helped fuel my passion of hiking to, and camping in, the middle of nowhere. All while perfecting my art of not killing anything. But it’s still cool af

Hey, this Al. Born and raised in Central Oregon. I’ve hunted and fished my whole life, but long range shooting and bass fishing are my current favorites. Co-wner of a smallish excavation company. I work a ton but try and get out in the field with my kids as much as possible. Here is a pic of my latest conquest, killed in Oregon of all places. IMG_7252.jpeg

Hey everyone, my name is Matthew Moore. Fortunate enough to have lived in Alaska for the majority of my life.

Met my wife while she was a tour guide in the Southwest and she decided Alaska would be a cool place to live (and that I was an interesting enough guy). We have a 3 year old girl and 1 year old boy. Love raising my kids in Alaska doing all the fun stuff. Even lucked out and got a Dall Sheep 10 days before my girl was born!

I work in the maritime/tourism field for now. Besides work and family time I like to hunt, fish, hike, read and look up new gear!

I "live" in the Austin suburb of Pflugerville. Since I "retired" from MarSOC EOD in 2013 I spend at least 9 months a year out of the country in "high threat" embassies. For the past 2 years I've been in Dakar Senegal- which is actually pretty nice. Before this it was 2.5 years in Lagos, Nigeria- a punishment I wouldn't wish on my enemies- and prior to that I was embedded with Kurds in Northern Iraq for 3 years.

With this limited time home I do what my wife tells me to do. I've developed an affinity for 2011s and try to get to Staccato Ranch at least once a week when I'm conus. When my wife stops spending money like it's a race I hope to get back to bow hunting and skydiving- but currently the "honey do" list is my life when I'm back.

Me and the boys- I'm the distinguished older gentleman

Great to see another Oregonian in here, I grew up on the Umatilla Reservation outside of Pendleton.

Nice dude, I am in Austin. Great to have you in here.

I live in the People's Republic of Kalifornia, and I build, shoot, and write about firearms (and knives) for Dillon Precision's The Blue Press and Reloader.com... at least up till this month because they just published their last issue. Which I was in. (Yay?) Publishing on my website CloverSpear.com now.

Unless F&E wants to talk? Hint, hint...

I was a competitive shooter prior to semi-retiring a few years ago, where I got my rear-end handed to me at the highest levels in Steel Challenge, though I did win the Smoke and Hope stage for two years in a row at Area 2 in PCC, which aint nothin'.

My favorite competition story happened at the California State Championships, when I was in the box and shot my first string on Smoke and Hope at a 1.3sec run. It was the fastest stage I shot, ever. The world champion was in my squad, sitting behind me, and he shouts, "Holy shit!!!" I'm wearing electronic muffs, so I hear this and think, "The world champion just shouted 'Holy shit!!!' at my run," and so I blew the next two strings and tanked the stage. Go me!

My second favorite story happened when I caught a .38super ricochet in my hand on Day 1 of the Steel Challenge World Championships (or maybe it was the West Coast Steel Championships???), wrapped it up, and competed the rest of the day and next with a bullet in me. I didn't do so well that year... (PS: the lesson I learned from that experience was: "the more expensive the surgeon, the less likely he is to ask why there's a bullet in your body.")

We’ve got readers and subscribers scattered from the swamps of Florida to the mountains of Montana, and a few even further out. So let’s get a lay of the land.

Where do you call home base?
And when you’re off the clock, what’s your thing? Hunting, wrenching, fishing, forging, flying, sailing, training, tinkering, storytelling… whatever keeps you from staring at a screen too long.

Drop a quick note below. Photos are always welcome. Bonus points if your off-duty life looks like something we’d write a story about.
I'm in Utah, Farmington Utah - originally from Georgia, moved out west after college, spent a good portion of my life living around New Mexico. If I'm not working, I'm probably hiking or hunting or preparing for hunting season with my dog Bridger - and even then I'm probably figuring out how to take calls for work when doing those things to not be the home office. I used to run a martial art company, Pramek, published a bunch of books on martial art and combative pedagogy and personal development, and now I've given up that life to save my back and brain from more damage. Glad to be here, always up to do something with like-minded people.
Santa Rosa Valley Ca. lil small AG corridor in between the burbs. Spent my whole life of 53 years here. Love it here. I can shoot on my property, MTB from my home and fish and surf 30 minutes away. It’s a good life.

I'm in the Antelope Valley, eastern Los Angeles County. It's an hour and a half's drive and a world away from Ventura County, lol. I get to watch the B-21 fly over my head and revel in the beauty of dirt and Joshua Trees. (That was sarcasm, btw.). It can be an interesting place, though. Here's another photo of my carry knife, but in this one it's surrounded by fragments of the only test aircraft that Chuck Yeager ever crashed, an NF-104A Starfighter. I got the coordinates and drove the jeep with my family to the crash site, where we scavenged a few bits up. As for me and Ventura County, my shooting team took over the famous Piru Steel Challenge range from Mike Dalton when he completely retired, and we ran the California matches for a couple of years. I've had the Piru range all to myself MANY times!!! Nowadays, I've got a 600 meter rifle range only about a half-hour away, plus a tactical bay for when I'm feeling spicy, so I can't complain too much.IMG_5400.jpg

That’s epic. I used to Moto at Piru MX back in the day. Shot at the filmore range in the past. Been trying to get on Taran Tac since my buddy’s kid works there but nothing yet. Would be cool. I just bought myself an ESEE 4 for Christmas. I’ll work my way up to a winkler.

Merry Christmas my friend

Merry Christmas to you, too! I know Piru MX-- drive right past it to the old SC range, and my brother-in-law and nephews ride there a lot. The "secret" Red Bull racing complex was (is?) on the other side of the hill, accessible from my old shooting range.

I've shot on Taran's range-- they let me zero an upper after I bought it from them. This was back when the range was the shop, complete with trapeze ropes! Taran is a huge supporter of competitive shooters and was the first guy to lend me a hand when I was starting out. He builds some of the best guns on the planet. Tell your son to learn from him!!! My team captain used to shoot with Taran on the Smoking Holes team back in the way old days, and so our jersey had this square and center:IMG_0651.jpg

Hey.
Im John and I did not have the fortune to be born in the USA. I'm from Sweden and I work as a biomedical equipment technician.
Didn't grow up hunting, but always had a fascination with it. We dont have the public land hunting opportunities in Sweden as you americans, but luckily my only neighbor is a farmer, who wants me to hunt his land.
John, welcome to the FE Society. Ask your farmer neighbor if he wants your Field Ethos friends to hunt his land, too. We love Sweden.

Hey Shane. I live in Bozeman Montana. It is a horrible, windswept place with very little redeeming qualities. It is frozen and buried with snow 9 months of the year. Hardly any public land and other than squirrels and catfish there is nothing to hunt or fish for anyway.

Now please go and tell everyone you know.
Bozeangeles. The new Jackson Hole

SW MO / NW AR. Horse trainer and cattle rancher. Other than that, whitetail and western big game. Archery and long guns. Stay fit. I’ll get a few shots with my camera from time to time. IMG_9866.jpegIMG_9867.jpegIMG_9868.jpeg
