I just got back from a quick strike mission down to Panama. Mostly rod and reel fishing, but we also did a bit of spearfishing.

We were in the Gulf of Chiriqui’ on the pacific side, staying on Islas Secas.

Though January is early for the hot Tuna bite, we still managed to put a handful of small Yellowfins on the boat, all caught on poppers.

We did some deep dropping in 100 to 150 fathoms and caught a couple handfuls of “Cherna” which is Panama’s version of a red grouper. Really good eating.

Fishing around the islands was slow, but we still managed to put a couple different types of snappers on the boat using slow pitch jigs and live baits.

All the Jack Crevalle you could want to catch, they eat like shit, but fun on light tackle.

We dove a couple pinnacles one afternoon and speared a decent Cubera in the fifty pound class as well as some nice Colorado snappers.

Marlin bite is slow, but will probably heat up soon.

Awesome stuff, @Pete Correale. I need to get back out on a boat and hit the open waters again. I used to fish out of Point Loma in San Diego often when I lived down there. Definitely miss the feeling of a 40+ pound bluefin rippin' the reel.

Nuthin’ better than the sound of heavy drag ripping off a big reel!

I have a solution to your problem…. We have a FE Outrider hosted trip in April to mainland Mexico fish on a Spencer (bad ass custom sportfish boat) you should round up a couple buddies and book it out!

Bad ass.

Guessing this is just a pinned string of reports so I will tack on here.. Bite in Cabo has kicked off strong this year... 5/7 on the Striped Marlin teaser fishing and a coupe mahi for dinner, probably saw another 20 or so tailers on Sunday this past weekend but no live bait... Not bad for a gringo running a little 40 year old Ocean Master... The bite 55 miles North of Cabo on the Pacific has been going off on the days its calm enough to run uphill, lots of boats getting 30-50 shots a day...

Awesome report! Keep em' comin'!.... I am going to start spending more time in Baja again.... I am breaking ground next week on a home build on a piece of property I bought with a buddy a while back, over on the Pacific side, south of Mag Bay.

I thought I saw some Kings mixed in with rainbows north of MKE on Lake Michigan, passed the power plant, turned out to be hammerheads. Who put those in there?

House up there will be sweet, make sure you build a gated side yard big enough that I can park my boat in it and leave it for the season :)

I am either bringing my trailer down from the states so that I can take my Ocean Master up there to fish next fall or buying a bigger boat I can fish up there next year on its own bottom... I am pretty sure that there is a pretty badass swordfish bite up there that has been untapped except for a couple commercial boats... We will see...

Down here in Todos Santos, BCS Sur, and its been a really good late season for fishing/diving. The water is still 73 degrees and a bunch of new bait moved down the coastline, most likely because of a recent water temp drop. That has translated into lights out Sierra "Spanish Mackerel" fishing. We went on Saturday 1/31/26 and it was lights out. The Sierra hang close to shore where the blue water meets the green churned out water. There we multiple schools of hundreds of fish.

ahh, the ol' Sierra Mack, the Green Horn's Wahoo.... Keep at it lil' guy, maybe, someday, you will venture out past the shallows and make us a real report....

I ice fish about once every 3 to 4 years. Iowa season is pretty short. Going to give it a run tomorrow afternoon.

Headed to Play Del Carmen area in March for my senior son's spring break trip. May have to look into fishing, I don't have a good track record with fishing on the ocean in remote places. Any suggestions in that area for a half day trip?

I really want to spear fish once in my life, tried it down there one time and it was so rough I could barely manage. The guide left me in the dust so after two hours of basically snorkeling with a spear gun in my hand I called it a day. I think he shot at one fish.

Roberto Navarro fishes a Panga down there and smashes the fish… We have messaged a few times back and forth about swordfishing and I have had 2 buddies fish over there with him and had great trips… Keep in mind, it’s usually a rough mother fucker there in the Spring…Easiest to catch him and get something booked through IG…
