The Mini 14 is one of those rifles I keep coming back to. It has that classic look, almost timeless, but at the same time it is just a really practical tool. It is not overcomplicated and not trying to be something it is not, which is part of the appeal.

I do not think it is a true alternative to the AR platform and I do not think it needs to be. But I do think it has a real use case, especially in a home defense role. Simple manual of arms, generally reliable, and in the right setup it can do a lot. I have been thinking about it more in 300 BLK, especially suppressed, and that is where it starts to get really interesting.

As far as setups, I have tried a few different things. I have run an ATI folding stock and also built my own folder using a JMAC Customs stock with a Sig Sauer hinge and a Choate pistol grip stock. After all that I still find myself going back to the traditional synthetic.

I have updated mine a bit with a picatinny rail setup and I run three rails right now. I have a foregrip on it, but I could easily see swapping that out for a bipod depending on how I wanted to use it. That mix of a classic rifle with some modern utility is really where it works for me.

If I were Ruger CEO for a day I would probably push a few changes. I would at least explore serializing a different part of the rifle, maybe something like the charging handle instead of the action. That could open the door to selling uppers and letting people swap between calibers like 5.56, 7.62x39, 300 BLK, or even something like 6 ARC. At the same time I understand why they have not done that. It is a relatively affordable rifle and part of the value is in its simplicity.

I also think the push to make it compatible with AR or AK pistol grips is a bit overrated at this point. The Mini 14 is its own thing and that is fine. What I would rather see is more compatibility within Ruger’s own lineup. Something like a Ranch Rifle Gen 2 that takes Mini 14 mags and is offered in 300 BLK would be really interesting.

One thing I do think should be standard is threading. It just makes the rifle more useful across the board, especially for anyone running suppressed.

Curious where others land on this. If you run a Mini 14, what setup are you using. If you do not, what has kept you away from it. And if Ruger were to update it, what would you want them to change or leave alone.

I have a Mini-14. I got it Cerakoted. put on a Hogue stock, a Vortex 2-7x32 scope I had lying around, and a sling. The main reason I love it is because it's the closest I can have to an AR here in California without having to jump through any hoops.

My biggest issue with it is that the barrel heats up very quickly and it goes from being very accurate to not accurate too quickly. I would love to find a better barrel for it, one that could take multiple shots without losing accuracy. I also wish it would take AR magazines rather than the specific ones it requires.

Accuracy System specializes on accurazing Mini14, rebarreling and different calibers. They did work on my REM 7400.

Good lord. This is gonna cost me a lot of money. Thanks 🙃

Seriously, they look amazing. I'll reach out tomorrow and have them help me figure out what I want them to do. Maybe I should figure out what I want to use it for...

We used the Mini 14 exclusively as our duty patrol rifle up until around 2010.. it is reliable and bulletproof.
I had a stainless model that I sent off to Accuracy Rifle Systems in Odessa Texas. They put a Lothar Walther Bull Barrel on it and recessed the muzzle and that thing would consistently put 5 shots into a 3/8th inch group at 100 yards... It was my go to predator rifle until I soured on the .223 as an all around predator cartridge, especially for large cougars, and coyotes.

My first non- rimfire rifle was a Mini-14 when I was 11 years old. Now you are making me want to go dig it out of the basement safe and put rounds through it. My only real complaint is the mags used to be expensive as shit compared to AR mags. Excellent weapon for a young man that may not be super diligent on maintenance or might through it around in the back of a side by side....

James Reeves has an interesting video explaining some legal advantages of a wood stocked Mini-14 over some of the other defensive carbine options.
His videos were what sold me on buying my first one. I have since gone back and forth on what makes the most sense, when I get home later I'll post pics of its current state.

Agreed, go and get it. The Garand action is just fun to use

That is an awesome picture! I'll try and replicate this with coyotes out here

I considered going thru them, the price is challenging, but no one else does mini 14 mods like them so....

My intro to the Mini-14 was with DOC, as the -14s sit in the towers right next to the 870s. Wood stocked stainless models, workhorse tanks, balanced, accurate AF, and a fun rifle to shoot. Eventually, when I find the "right" one I'll add it to the collection. Haven't followed the industry change ups on them, kinda like the Gen3 S&W 1006/1066/1076, they just take me back to some great times! Great thread!

The one I have been trying to find is in 6.8 spc, not because I need it or it is worth it, but I have become a mini14 fanatic and now I can't help it

I'll need to check that out. I replaced my wood stock with a synthetic one when I had mine Cerakoted. The wood one will still fit, it just might look weird with the FDE Cerakote

@Ron Dan I can't find it, got a link by any chance? I follow him on YT and don't see it Edit: Never mind, I found it. Watching now

Might as well try it. It’s so easy to swap out on those.

Cool. What did you think about it? I like how he uses real data.
Maybe I didn't find it then. The one I found was something like "Why the Mini-14 is better than the AR-15." He pointed out that the Mini is much more under the radar than an AR and also less maintenance intensive. He didn't reference any data that I heard
