It's right around the corner, maybe it has even already opened for some of you guys in other states..... Im getting all fired up!... I was swapping stories of hunts past with @Tony Caggiano and some of the other boys.... Let's see you guys post some photos and stories from memorable skirmishes you have had with long beards....

We have a pretty insane eastern population back home on the East End of Long Island. They were hunted to eradication like 100 years ago, and had no way of reflourishing because of geographics. Then, back in the 90’s the DEC captured like 75 of them in upstate NY and released them out in the Hamptons. Low predator numbers and no open season on them allowed the population to explode. Finally, about 3 years ago, they opened a spring season for us. I was down in SC Turkey hunting right before our first NY opener. I got in my truck, drove like 18 hours straight, back home to Montauk. Pulled in my driveway at like midnight, unpacked all my shit, laid down in bed for about a hour. Got up, jumped back in my truck, drove about a half hour to meet my buddy at one of our deer spots that we knew held birds. Showed up late, the sun was already on its way up. Me and my buddy were at my truck scrambling to get our shit together. We fire off a crow call, and a bird fires off a heavy gobble like a hundred yards away. We grab our shit and literally run full sprint in the direction and set up the decoys out in a small clearing. We set up next to each other agains a couple pines and let out a couple mouth calls. Within five minutes I hear one drum behind us. He comes in hot on our flank, straddles up to our Avian posturing jake decoy, and proceeds to beat the fuck out of it. I draw my bow back, go into full target panic mode, I had my 20 yard pin aimed at the ground by his feet. I couldn’t raise the pin, I know I know, sounds retarded, but target panic is real. In my head I knew I was fucked, but released the arrow anyways. It goes right into the ground in-between the long bears feet. He stops for a second, looks around, fans back up and then proceeds to jump back on the decoy. I knock another arrow, and this time send it straight through his chest. He ran like ten yards and died…. And that is the story of my first bird at home on Long Island…. We ended up driving over to another spot nearby, and its was pornographic. We had hooked up long beards all over us. I filmed my buddy shooting one with his bow with two cameras from two different angles. It was a pretty sick day.

Spring gobblers are one of my favorite things to chase. I killed my Merriams in Wyoming via the old shoot & scoot method. Beautiful bird. My last two Ohio gobblers have been monsters. Two years ago I shot “The Ostrich.” He was 25 lbs., had an 11” beard and 1 3/16” hooks. He came out in the field 200 yards away with 5 jakes and strutted for what seemed like an eternity to 30 yards before he got a face full of Hevi-Shot. Last year’s bird must’ve been “The Ostrich’s” heir apparent. He came in silent to my gobbler decoy after the rain cleared out and had the same fate. He wasn’t quite as heavy, but also had an 11” beard and 1 1/8” sharp hooks. I’m looking at heading to Florida in 2027 to get my Osceola and then to Texas for a Rio and helicopter hog hunt to finish my slam after that.IMG_0548_Original.jpegIMG_6151_Original.jpegIMG_7402_Original.jpegIMG_7431_Original.jpegIMG_7435_Original.jpeg

Love turkey hunting but I am still not great at it!

First picture is from last year. That call is a custom call I had made for my dad years ago. It’s old enough that it only has 3 grandkids names on it, my daughter wasn’t born yet. I found it in his hunting pack after he died. Bird looks awful cause his buddy beat him for 10 minutes after he was dead.

Second is my son’s bird from last year shot in the same place a week later. Bird was 30.6 lbs, 12-3/4” beard and 1-5/8” spurs.

Last pics are covid birds. We hunted our ass off on the doubles. I think we were in there 6-7 days before they finally came in. Then I went back in a day later on a night hunt and kill the third one! Covid was great I hunted and fished more in 18 months than I can remember.

Love to see that call... Keep the tradition going! Im sure your dad was looking down with a smile when u whacked those birds! 30 pounds is fucking ridiculous! danm...... I loved the covid lock down as well, we were just gettin' after it the whole time... Surfing, fishing and in the woods!

Iowa. I have never put anything in a book but I register that one for my son. It’s the 9th heaviest bird registered in Iowa. We weighed it on 3 different scales cause we didn’t believe it. Crazy thing is it was shot late 4th season so it was probably heavier early. Probably should have found a registered scale cause one of ours said 32 lbs. I took the lowest when registering it. I posted it before but it’s the best mount we have

Great birds I do want to get after other types of turkeys. NE is close enough its a shame I haven't gone after other birds.

Agree on the added love for archery birds. The only archery bird I have killed is during the fall walking out of the deer stand! Side note on that 30lb bird I had my bow in with us. We got into that set up late and looked over and there were hens roosted 150 yards away. I thought we were screwed and then they pitched into our setup. The one was a bearded hen. My son didn't want to shoot it so I missed it with my bow! Dropped the bow arm to peak! They walked away to about 80 yards. Two toms came in, one went to the hen and that big fucker came in, kid shot him at 55 cause he was starting to look like he was going to head over to the hens. The TSS shot is no joke he pummeled that bird.

Yeah,TSS is no joke. My buddies and I decided to hunt with .410’s a couple years ago. All three of us killed birds and thought we were hot shit. Then I took my 7 year old son out in the fall and he smoked a hen with the .410 he won at a wild game dinner like there was nothing to it.

How olds your boy? I am jealous my kids are getting old! My youngest is 15 so I got her a youth Turkey tag for this season. It will be our last youth tag, she turns 16 before the season starts but we are good because I already bought it. Love the youth deer tag in Iowa it opens up a lot of time to get kids out. I am sad I don't have a youth to hunt with anymore!
