I had the opportunity to take a Ural for a spin while camping in Tennessee. It’s a pretty unique and quirky machine, and it was a lot of fun to ride.
A few observations: I had to muscle the bike around corners, and the steering damper was absolutely necessary due to the vibrations from this “refined” Russian machine. There was no mistaking when you shifted gears — it came with a very audible and tactile “kerchunk.”
I engaged the sidecar wheel for a brief moment, and I can tell you that unless you’re in sloppy terrain, you’re only going in a straight line. It’s slow and cumbersome, with low speed but plenty of torque — kind of how I imagine a large Russian woman would be in a wrestling match.
Overall, it’s a fun machine to tool around back roads on. It also has a very necessary reverse gear.
