"Build it and convince us why it’s the best scout rifle." JV

I'm interpreting this to mean; Sell me THIS [Scout] pen......? I *think* I accidentally built one....what were Cooper's parameters for accuracy? These dang rabbit holes KEEP opening up ........
The accuracy requirement from Cooper was 2 MOA. That's from 1983, the first Scout Rifle Conference. Photo from Richard Mann’s book, “The Scout Rifle Study.”

Hot Take incoming:

I started this mess with the original thread. And LPVO vs Scout scope was really one of the biggest things I was getting at. Is a Scout rifle with an LPVO above the receiver really a Scout??? A donut with no holes is a danish. Or something.

I don't make the rules, but I think you need to make it a true Scout, with Scout rail and scope, to win this thing. Otherwise, you can just make a couple of mods to the Steyr No Country. Good luck beating that.

So a red dot in a forward position will be an eliminating factor?

Is it dead? Obviously not, as many of us ferals have been building them for years now, and not even *really* knowing it beyond our own parameters which have grown into our brains from actual fieldwork. However, I can appreciate the purists and their History WITH the actual man, much respect.

That great pdf piece which Bill posted from the 1983 1st tabling of Scout Rogues, also notes a Super Scout based on/in a heavier package in 350 Rem.. Therein lies the tenderloin rub; That was 1983. I hadn't even met Suzie down on the lake, next to the lighthouse yet!
In that we have so many trigger-nut derelicts here perhaps the question(s) could be; How many entries can I do? I envision this FE Society to be at least a 50 year deal, into the future, so may the Creative team come up with a new "Scout" superlative descriptor which brings a Cooper blessing from above rather than lightning bolts, or......just leave it?

I'm not gonna over-think it too much; IF it doesn't shoot, but *LOOKS* good/right? Another beautiful can o' worms....Thank You JV!

Not in my mind. I'm saying one could argue to win a Scout build there should be an optic on a Scout rail, instead of an LPVO above the receiver.
Two photos of my Ruger GSR prior to mounting the current Leupold optic. This is an old Aimpoint SC-9000, 4-MOA dot. This optic now lives on a Rifle Dynamics AK-47. I don’t think Cooper was much of a red dot fan, not surprising as they were not very reliable then compared to now.

Beautiful! Is it a Fuller RD build, or the new guys?

It was back in ‘18 when I ordered it. I think Jim was still there but he was more of a consultant/trainer. I met him briefly at The Red Oktober Kalashnikov Championship match in southern Utah that year. A couple of pics when it was new

@Chad Adams you're really going to look at these photos and tell me they won't qualify as a Scout Rifle?

No dude, you're reading me backwards. Or I said it backwards, whatever. Anything on a scout rail looks good to me. Some Scout rifles now have rails that go all the way back over the receiver, so you get these variable optics in a traditional mount. Which is fine if that's what you want. And I get wanting the option. But not very scout to me, per se. I don't think there are any rules here, just saying how I would probably vote. Scout rail ftw.

This got out of hand in a hurry. But I’ll stay with the thread as I’m learning much on all the back and forth, and I applaud the lack of anger.

My wildly under informed and by fefinition less “Cooper above all” view, huge respect to you all who have more knowledge and time on topic, would have been (prior to this):

Under 7.25 lbs, points for anyone landing it close to 6.5

Magazine fed

Bolt action

Under 39 inches, points for shorter

16 inch barrel ideally, lose points for longer

.308 as a standard, but points for different with one hell of an argument

Hard sights have to be present

Bi-pod attached or quick detach

Top rail with an optic - I would have opted for an LPVO that could also double as a red dot, weight gets impaired if you did an extra red dot but it would look cool - points for more forward mounted

Low point category, but all muted in orientation, nothing flashy

AMEN!! And the lack of anger is truly impressive!! I believe being overly pedantic about any of the parameters could stand in the way of some genuine creativity. Mine will definitely have some creative elements, and miss some of the marks according to the Gospel of Cooper...but do those things make it "not a scout" or will they make it "an even better version of the scout"?? That is up to this group. I think ultimate beauty comes down to the beholder, but so long as function dictates form I suspect we are going to see some RAD builds... I am here for the party, win or lose, it's just gonna be fun. God knows what kind of ideas/innovation/features/fixes this crew is going to come up with that we can work into other builds of our own. I remain stoked.

We should team up to build a gun for this.

I believe we FES men are reasonable and professional. EVERYone will walk with another long gun which stops many threats. I believe we ARE outside the other boxes. Well, except for the Gnome @Sean Molina of course, he's just kinda IN the box? ANyone prone to early releases like your wife says you are? Oh shit, HR called, how many women have thrown in their beret? In the trinary levels; Why not TAKE the Scout/SuperScout to it's next evolution(s)?
