I know a few of you or maybe more enjoy cigars. Uncle @Terry Houin had one in his loadout the other day, and @Jason Vincent showed showed us a nice prototype cast iron cigar ashtray. We all know Alps are the most efficient way to get your fix these days, but when a man has some time for ritual and self-care, a great Stogie or pipe comes to mind.
Throughout history, influential men have enjoyed the leaf. Einstein and William Faulkner always had a pipe held in pursed lips, especially while thinking or writing. Roosevelt loved his Cubans, smoking one each day, JFK had his H. Upmanns, and Fidel loved his lanceros - usually enjoying a Trinidad Fundadores or Cohiba lancero and often sharing them with political friends and foreign dignitaries.
Personally, I’m a huge fan of Padron Maduros in most all formats, but a box press 2000 maduro if I’m a bit more pressed for time and 4000 series or an anniversary 1926 for a longer smoke or if celebrating a special occasion. If you don’t like Padron, you don’t like cigars. My favorite micro brands include Foundation, Dunbarton, Aladino, and CLE. Cannot go wrong with Fuente Opus X and most things that AJ Fernandez blends.
My favorite old world pre-embargo brands still existing today include Montecristo no. 2, Romeo y Juliet, Hoyo de Monterrey (no. 4 epicure). I have a box or two of a particular favorite format in cuban brands reserved for my kids’ birthdays - enjoy one each year and journal about the year they had. It’s helped me slow down and appreciate my kids when day to day, they can drive you up the wall.
What are you dudes smoking these days outside of upper decking Alps and shotgunning lung darts for your nicotine fix?
