Would put a suppressor in it too. I built all my current AR’s so this might make sense to go Factory.

Thinking 556, 10.5” but not sure if any of the other barrel lengths are better for this set up.
10.5” or 11.5” are great options. My go-to is a 11.5” Sig MCX 5.56.

You should absolutely build it for a suppressor.

What’s the price point on the MCX? Do you have any additional accessories on it? Thinking flashlight would be my only intention there.

They’re around $2,200 street price. Up front on mine I do a hand stop, a Surefire Scout Light, and a BE Meyers MAWL.

Only a 1 stamp gun, it’s integrally suppressed. The overall barrel length is 16” plus. The rifled portion is about 12”. It’s the Gunwerks, “Skunkwerks” division The Accountant in 308 Win. It was packaged in a slick leather briefcase. I used it to take a 324” bull elk in eastern Wyoming on Sept. 1 of 2024. My brother has the same rifle, he’ll be taking it to South Africa when we go in August.

Ok, wow, I got most of them here!
Photo 1, the newest from Gunwerks. The TAF (tiny as fuck) 11.25” barrel 6mm ARC, 6ix+ steel Gunwerks can. It’s on order, being built.
Photo 2, FN PS-90, AAC 5.56mm can.
Photo 3, H&K SP-5K, Q Erect9r can.
Photo 4, Glock 34, B&T chassis, SilencerCo Osprey-9.
Photo 5, Gunwerks (Skunkwerks) BlastR, 12.5” 6.5 Creedmoor, Gunwerks 8ight steel can. This was my introduction to Gunwerks.
Photo 6, Q Boombox, 8.6BLK, 12”. I run this with their “Prototype” 8.6 can.
Photo 7, Q Honey Badger, 300 BLK. 7” barrel, Trash Panda can. My truck gun.
Photo 8, Q The Fix, 8.6BLK, 12” barrel this kit was number 50 of the first 50 Q released. I run this with their “Prototype” can as well.
Well done!

So few of these were made. Such a flex to drop that you AND your brother got one.

Thinking 556, 10.5” but not sure if any of the other barrel lengths are better for this set up.
I'd highly recommend 11.5" over 10.5" for two reasons:
1. The dwell time and operating system. The extra inch of barrel allows for a much softer operating and longer lasting gun.
2. Believe it or not the extra inch of barrel gets you better ballistics by a decent amount.

Good to know. Appreciate the input.
A lot of good information in here. Depending on where you are and how far you want to shoot I'd look at anything in the 11.5-13.7" range for a shorty, "do it all" rifle. The 11.5 with a dot and mag is a classic, and a 13.7 with an LPVO will be able to reach out while still being handy.

I wouldn't necessarily be concerned with getting a factory SBR, there's plenty of companies making reliable uppers and lowers you can slap together. Geissele, BCM, SOLGW are just a few off the top of my head. If you ever want to get into the night vision game I'd avoid BCM though, I've found their rails to be some of the weaker ones on the market.

I'm partial to LMT Defense ARs though I've never seen one stocked anywhere. I always have to order from one of their dealers. I used Titan Defense in Scottsdale AZ and they've been great to work with.

Can a SBS M4 and an SPC9 enter this thread?

S&W and Springfield are great options at a lower price point. DD is at a higher price point. Depending on your anticipated use and your budget, we can help guide you. We can talk through barrel lengths, calibers, accessories, style, etc.

Building your own can be a lot of fun but I also like a well-made factory SBR if I’m going to trust my life to it.
Solid advice! Our department switched to the S&W M&P platform after extensive testing and evaluation... It's solid and reliable, and relatively inexpensive. Our patrol rifles weren't SBRs but the platform is what it is whether it's a 16 inch barrel or an 11.5..

Love this thread. Looking at picking up my first SBR and not sure which one to run with? Build my own? Daniel Defense, Smith & Wesson and Springfield SBRs were all at the local gun shop, but too many options. I like aero but not sure they have an SBR?

Any input or suggestions?
I think you’re already getting solid advice already from everything I’ve read so far. At the. end of the day it’s “What do you want?”

My recent build #2 was a refresh of my Colt. I wanted to maintain it’s “Colt’ness”, and that drove a lot of my choices.

Another point mentioned. If you’re betting your life on it, that may favor a quality factory gun. A point driven home in a recent armorers course I attended is… “the fucking thing must work”. I’m not betting my life on anything I’ve built just yet.

FWIW

SBS has entered the chat. I’m here for it.

Appreciate the input. After the reviews, I’m liking the Sig, the Springfield and the Daniel Defense. Appreciate everyone’s input on this!

That’s good to know. There’s some decent nuisance extermination around where I’m at, so that’s on my radar for sure. But that’s a whole new realm to dive into!
