Super cool. The only thing that would make it cooler to me is if it has no forward assist and a third hole drilled into the receiver. Here's my coolest shorty... View attachment 2515
I was just about to comment on the third hole! That’s no “SBR”, that’s a machinegun! Nice.I hear you on the forward assist, third hole is there... little easier to see here... View attachment 2523
technically...it's both... haha It's an original XM177, pre-ban & transferrable. Def more of an investment piece that a guy can enjoy from time to time.I was just about to comment on the third hole! That’s no “SBR”, that’s a machinegun! Nice.

Totally missed the third hole! (That’s what she said). I’ve always had an affinity for the short ARs. I saw my first XM177 (or maybe a GAU 5) during my Air Force time. Many of the LE and SP guys had them.technically...it's both... haha It's an original XM177, pre-ban & transferrable. Def more of an investment piece that a guy can enjoy from time to time.
Had to like just for “That’s what she said..”That’s badass

Going to a short barrel, you'll get the best efficiency from cartridges that don't have a lot of case capacity per bore diameter ratio. JD Jones nailed this back in the day with the 300 Whisper (now the 300 BLK) and regardless of what you call it, it is the quintessential SBR cartridge, in my opinion. That opinion also won't get you a cup of shitty coffee...so take it with a grain of salt. The 300 BLK will typically run both subs and supers in a pistol length gas system with minimal drama, but keep the barrel under 10". It also works great with cans, as you're typically burning less than 20 grains of propellant and there is less gas volume to contend with and the larger bore volume also gives it more room to expand thus lowering the muzzle exit pressure and gas velocity - both allow the suppressor to be more quiet. These things are great, but far and away the best thing about going with the 300 BLK is the fact that it is very easy to feed from very common magazines. It can be persnickety in some of the polymer mags, but I've had very few issues feeding it from USGI magazines. Ammo is beyond plentiful. If you build your own on a Form 1, it might save you a little time vs the Form 4 route. That said, I'm not sure what approval times look like currently. BCM parts are the way to go in my opinion... on the "other side of the tracks" I stuck a 7.5" AR Stoner barrel on a Form 1 300 BLK thrash rig, and it shot surprisingly well. Not sure if I just got lucky tho... pic of the thrash rig attached, for proof of build.. lol If you want to go totally gangster, and I can just hear the 8.6 BLK guys screaming already lol, check out the 338 Spectre from Southern Ballistics Research. It feeds from 6.8 SPC mags, but it's a badass cartridge - basically the American version of the 9x39. Their website is a little rough, but they make great stuff mostly contract ammo for the Mil/LE world. I do a little consulting for them from time to time and have worked with the 338 Spectre a lot. I'd just call them if you have any interest in pursuing the Spectre, they are great dudes.Love this thread. Looking at picking up my first SBR and not sure which one to run with? Build my own? Daniel Defense, Smith & Wesson and Springfield SBRs were all at the local gun shop, but too many options. I like aero but not sure they have an SBR?
Any input or suggestions?
This is awesome info. I appreciate you taking the time to send this over. 300 BLK is back on my radar.Going to a short barrel, you'll get the best efficiency from cartridges that don't have a lot of case capacity per bore diameter ratio. @Jason Vincent and I talked about this a little last night. For really short barrels, I like 300BLK over 5.56.This is awesome info. I appreciate you taking the time to send this over. 300 BLK is back on my radar.
The UMP 45 is a rockstar!@Jason Vincent and I talked about this a little last night. For really short barrels, I like 300BLK over 5.56.
You might get an argument from @Christian Craighead for 45ACP.
For sure. The 223/5.56 really starts to lose its ass with barrels under about 12" even with the heaviest bullets. (12" bbl w/75 or 77 is generally around 2350-2400fps-ish at muzzle) Then there is the bullet performance element; most of the 223/5.56 bullets will lose a lot of their ability to expand as designed when impact velocities drop to ~1800fps at that point, penetration can also become less predictable. Extra twist rate can help, but it seldom trumps impact velocity. For work at conversational distance...it's no factor, but within 200 yards bullets will be under 2000fps. Narrow-ish performance window. The 300 BLK really comes into its own with barrels 10" and shorter as it will achieve similar MV with bullets 1.75X heavier. Doesn't necessarily increase that imaginary 200yd range, but it will do more work from start to stop. That said, I wouldn't argue @Christian Craighead about the 45 AUTO being an even better choice for really short barrels, because he'd be right. In the >1800fps velocity realm, bullet mass and frontal area start to carry a lot more weight in the equation. (horrible pun, but completely intended lol) That said, if a guy is gonna run an AR, on gas, in a config that Stoner probably never dreamed of (really short barrel)....the 300 BLK really stacks the deck the best of any cartridge out there, at least in my opinion. Reliability with available mags, gas pressure & volume at port with a pistol length system, and still generating enough velocity to deliver decent expansion and penetration but with a significantly heavier bullet.@Jason Vincent and I talked about this a little last night. For really short barrels, I like 300BLK over 5.56.

I need to get one of those FN Specialties FRTs they released at SHOT for this now.Technically there are two stamps present here.
